Review: If you can find a toddler that doesn’t love to get messy sometimes, then I will be gobsmacked. Messy play is great fun & is brilliant for your child’s development. We have been stocking up on craft supplies recently, so that Georgie can play & paint and generally have lots of fun being creative & exploring new materials.
Of course, as the title implies, all this messy play comes with, well, mess. This is where the messy me tunic comes in.
Made of oilcloth, the Messy Tunic is a protective covering for mealtimes or messy play. It is sleeveless with an open back, with a strip of velcro securing it together at the back of the neck.
We found the Messy Tunic very easy to use; getting it onto Georgie was really simple as the arm holes have plenty of space for little arms & it only takes a few seconds to whip it on & Velcro it up. Georgie definitely preferred this tunic to the more traditional long-sleeved style plastic cover all, right from the word go – she always objects to wearing those at playgroup!
The tunic itself was very unrestrictive; Georgie was able to lean all the way across the table when she was playing, whilst still staying safely covered up from the paint she was leaning in! With her arms completely open she was free to move around easily, although it meant that she couldn’t wear a long-sleeved t-shirt whilst playing, and her vest sleeves were exposed to the paint flying about. The design could possibly be improved by the addition of some short sleeves just to add s bit more protection for a vest or short-sleeved t-shirt, but only if doing so didn’t impede the great flexibility of this tunic.
I found the tunic very attractive too, so often protective play gear is quite ugly – it’s not that important to look good while messing about, but it makes a nice change! There are 5 different fabrics available so there is something to suit every taste.
The design of the tunic stopped Georgie from becoming too overheated or sweaty; I have noticed that traditional style coveralls don’t allow her skin to breathe and she can become a little sticky wearing them, especially in summer or in a hot room. With her sensitive skin, it’s great to find a way to keep her clothes protected without giving her eczema an excuse to flare up.
The oilcloth is soft & quite comfortable; Georgie didn’t try to remove it once, which is high praise indeed from our little girl! It fits from “1 to 3 years”, and I think Georgie will get about 2 more years use out of it as she is so slim.
The Messy Tunic is really easy to wipe clean; because it is made from oilcloth you just need a damp cloth and it is clean in about 30 seconds in most cases. For more stubborn stains you can “occasionally” pop it into the washing machine on a 30 degree cycle.
At £11.99 the Messy Tunic is more expensive than most cover all bibs, but the quality of the material, the fact it will last years, and the superior design make it a worthwhile investment. Just the fact that I was able to get Georgie into something very protective without a small wrestling match being involved convinces me it is worth the money! You will only ever need one of these as it is so easy to keep clean and feels very tough & hard-wearing.
I’m going to give this tunic 4 out of 5 stars; I think it’s pretty fantastic, but wish that it provided enough protection for short sleeves.
