An alternative Mother’s Day gift guide

Disclosure: I was gifted with these products free of charge for the purpose of this post – but I have written my honest opinions as always.

An Alternative Mother's Day Gift Guide

With Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, it is the perfect time to give a gift as a token of thanks to the Mum of your family. But… what if the Mother in your life is like me. I am not a “hearts and flowers” girl. With the exception of a weakness for Hotel Chocolat (ahem husband of mine) I don’t do fancy chocolates, any flowers or plants I get seem to die ridiculously fast, and I don’t go in for a lot of smellies stuff. Basically, I’m not a girly girl… not in the slightest.

So, what do you give a Mum who wouldn’t love half the things on a typical gift guide? I’m going to try and answer that question. I’ve been sent some fab (and pretty unusual) gifts to test out specifically for this post – so here’s my verdict.

Beefayre Mummy Bee Candle

Now, I know I said I wasn’t much of a girly girl but I do have a weakness for a scented candle or wax melt – especially when it does good at the same time. This Lavender & Geranium scented Mummy Bee candle smells amazing, and 3% of all their profits goes towards bee conservation. I love the design on the glass, it is really pretty – I’ll definitely be washing it out and keeping it once the candle has all burned down.

Cake Angels Baking Supplies

I really enjoy baking with the girls – especially Lydia who loves nothing more that to mix up some cake batter and help me decorate some cupcakes. If the Mum in your family likes baking as much as I do – when I have the time(!) – then why not put together a mini hamper of fun baking goodies like this one the folks over at Cake Angels sent me?

I’ve been using Cake Angels decorations for a few years now and they are always really fun, not to mention tasty. I’ve promised Lydia I’ll be doing some after school baking with her this week so we’ll be putting some of these to good use – keep an eye on our instagram to see what we make!

Family Tree Personalised Cushion

This family tree cushion from Funky Pigeon is lovely and a really nice addition to the day bed in my home office. Lydia was really excited to spot her name on the cushion, and I really like things like this that represent our little family.

Ultimate Nintendo Merch Crate

We are a family of gamers and this merch box from Find Me a Gift is full to the brim with nerdy Nintendo goodness. Who doesn’t love a blind bag? The mini question block light is super cute and even makes the right sound effect when you pop it to turn it on and off. James has been eyeing up the Gameboy money box, and the Zelda multi-tool is going straight onto my keyring.

The Mario coasters have gone straight into use in the living room – and been much admired by the kids! Georgie especially is a big Zelda and Mario fan at the moment so she has been trying to sneak away my backpack buddies.

AncestryDNA Kit

This one is definitely on the weirder side of things. My Mum is an Ancestry member and has researched generations of family history on both sides of my family tree, so I knew she would get a kick out of this gift idea. AncestryDNA lets you see your genetic profile – it estimates your origins from 350 ancestral regions around the world.

It’s a really simple process to send off a sample, and I’m looking forward to getting my results back and sharing them with Mum. They have a Mother’s Day discount on right now too.

UGears Treasure Box

This treasure box is possibly my favourite thing on the list… it is a build it yourself kit which is absolutely ingenious. The UGears kits come flat packed and you have to pop out the pieces and slot them together to create something fantastical.

This kit creates a treasure box which you can use to store your jewellery, or any bits & bobs you want to keep safely tucked away. The top of the box lid rotates slightly allowing you to unlock the box and remove a key, which you then use in the front of the box to turn the gears hidden inside, which then opens up the lid. I had an enjoyable evening piecing this together and the finished box is really attractive in a sort of steampunk way.

Speck Phone Case

I recently upgraded my iPhone to a beautiful iPhone X and what better way to show it off than with a sturdy, but clear, case like this one from Speck. The Presido Clear case they sent me is a smidgen bulkier than the cases I normally go for, but it is super protective and looks great on the phone. I don’t have to worry about dropping my iPhone with it in this… and that’s a good thing too as it already took a rather bouncy trip down the stairs. Oops.

Make it Medley Ravensburger Jigsaw Puzzle

Anyone who reads this blog regularly knows that I am a huge puzzle fan. I like brain teasers and puzzle apps on my phone, but I especially love a good jigsaw. This new Make it Medley jigsaw from Ravensburger’s Perplexing Puzzle range looks fab and I can’t wait to get stuck into it soon. This range of puzzles are “challenging… but not impossible” which is the perfect level for me – not so hard that I get frustrated, but difficult enough to give my little grey cells a good workout.

Personalised Coaster

This personalised coaster from is a bit of fun and looks really swish – I do like some nice typography. The quality of the coaster is really good, especially for the price, and it is going to look really great on my desk. They have a decent selection of coasters to choose from, and other personalisable (if that’s not a word, it is now!) gifts too. It’s not a site I have come across before, but I like the styles they have available.

*The first one I was sent had a spelling mistake (oops) so this is just the proof image for now, and I’ll update this post with a photo when the real one arrives!

Boodles Mulberry Sloe Gin

I’m not much of a drinker and I definitely don’t like most gins, but I do have a weakness for sloe gin. This attractive bottle of Boodles Mulberry Sloe Gin looks great and I’m looking forward to trying it.

So there you have it – a handful of gift ideas for Mums that don’t just want another bunch of flowers. I hope you find this helpful!
