When we were looking at buying houses back in November, one of the priorities was that I would have somewhere that I could create a workspace to have somewhere to blog, and to do my self employed work too. James will be able to use it as well, whenever he works from home.
The first room that I have completely organised in our new home is the living room; it is our haven from the chaos in the rest of the house and it is officially now a box-free zone!
I spent the £100 John Lewis vouchers I won for our Winter Little Adventures post from Britmums on bits and pieces for my little corner office, and I’m really pleased with how it’s come together. We bought a second hand desk from the Mind charity furniture shop, and I really love it.
Our existing desk chair goes perfectly with the new desk, and we have three shelves we bought years ago that we’ve put up for all our CDs, blu-rays & PS3 games. I’ve got my craft & sewing stuff on the top shelf too, and my little stationery storage drawers on the bottom shelf.
Our Philips Sound Ring is also now living on my shelving – we can airplay music wirelessly from our phones or my laptop to this, and also lift it off it’s base to take it to a different room. It’s a neat little gadget!
I treated myself to an Apple Magic Mouse with my John Lewis vouchers, and ordered a “mouse rug” for my new mouse from eBay. I also used the vouchers to get a sharpener pen pot, bamboo magazine file, desk lamp & a silly pen that I couldn’t quite resist. I may have gone over my £100 voucher budget a tad!
As well as the John Lewis purchases, I got a few fun sticky notes and a cat ruler from eBay, along with a desktop bin – with Lydia scrambling around under my desk I didn’t want to put a regular bin underneath as it would just get emptied onto the carpet!
The finishing touches are photos of our wedding and family – I have framed photos on the shelves, and several canvases up on the wall above the desk.
It’s been great fun creating this space for myself and translating the vision in my head to the reality in the room. I am so pleased as the space seems to work really well – it feels less like a desk in the living room, and more like a proper corner office. The layout of the living room makes it feel like we have a cosy area for relaxing & play, as well as my productive space – but I can sit here and interact with everyone else in the room easily too.
I’ve tried to stick with the colours teal, orange & black to bring it all together, without it being too much or too matchy-matchy. It feels like a comfortable space and I think it is going to work well for me, and hopefully I will be able to get a lot of work done in my new “corner office”. What do you think?
