Life under Lockdown

Home Chit Chat Life under Lockdown

I’ve debated with myself whether or not to write this post; does the world really need another blog post about the coronavirus? However, this is my blog about my experiences and thoughts, so here we are.

The girls are on day five of homeschooling – or, more accurately, distance learning – and they are really enjoying it so far. I’m trying to keep things fairly relaxed while making sure they work their way through the home learning packs the school sent them home with. Their primary school were great – even before the closures announced they had two weeks of work in their bags and instructions of what was planned for after the Easter break, and how we’ll be accessing further work.

We’ve mixed things up a bit, taking advantage of some of the great resources that are available right now. They’ve done a few sessions of PE with Joe, some Cosmic Kids yoga, and are really loving Mark Rober’s science lessons. We replicated his ‘will it float?’ experiment outside in the garden with all sorts of objects, including an egg box boat. Twinkl worksheets and other online printable resources have also come in handy, especially for maths loving Lydia who finished all the maths questions in her two week pack in three days.

Georgie and Lydia have both started online diaries to blog about their home schooling, and what they are getting up to. Part of Lydia’s literacy work was to start a diary, so being the geeks we are (and partly inspired by Jem) we’ve gone for an online one – which has the added benefit of keeping family up to date with them too… from a safe distance!

Right now, we are just trying to stay safe at home. James has taken over my office to work from home, and so I am relegated to squeezing in some work time on my iPad on the sofa while the girls are doing their school work. Mind you, since most of my clients have lost most of their income I’ve lost most of mine, so even if I did have the time I wouldn’t be doing much at all – thank goodness for the grant they announced for the self employed.

It’s been a little tough the last few days as my head has been playing up – chronic pain conditions do not go too well with home schooling. One of the big reasons I am self employed is that when I am ill I don’t have to work and I can spend a large chunk of my day in a dark room, but being ill doesn’t stop the kids needing supervision & help, so I’ve just been sat in a miserable heap on the sofa.

I hope you are all staying safe, and have access to the help you need, if you need any. I’m working on more printables to share for practising maths and so on, so let me know if you have any requests!

  1. Why shouldn’t write about our Coronavirus experience, it’s history in the making! I think everyone should be sharing their experience. How lovely your girls have their own online diaries. I wish I could get mine interested. Most of my older kids work is on screens and submitted to their teachers, so they are spending even more time glued to their laptops than in the holidays! The Little Man has a been a bit of a struggle but I’m not pushing too hard. I just heard that you and James are not well, take care both of you, I hope you are feeling better soon xx

  2. Yeah kids are most disturbed during lock down. I think we will not ever face kind of days in future as whole world facing it. Thanks for make some work for kids during this pandemic.
