As a family of huge Disney fans, it wasn’t a surprise that we squealed with joy when we were offered the chance to review the latest Disney on Ice extravaganza – I squealed when I got the e-mail, and the girls squealed with pure excitement when we told them! Disney on Ice presents Worlds of Enchantment is around two hours long, with an intermission halfway through.
The first half of the show features Toy Story and The Little Mermaid, with the second half of the show featuring Cars and Frozen. We went to see the show at the Barclaycard Arena (formerly the NIA), in Birmingham city centre. The arena has had a lot of investment put into it in the last few years, and it is a great venue with good facilities, and comfortable seating.
Hosting the show are Mickey Mouse, Minnie & some of their friends. They even have a car of their own which they drive on the ice. Lydia is a massive Minnie Mouse fan so she was so excited everytime they skated out onto the ice, and was waving her Minnie toy around like mad & waving.
The Toy Story part of the show roughly follows the story of the third film, with the toys going to the Sunnyside nursery and meeting Hug-a-Lot, and Barbie & Ken having several great ice dances together. The toy army scenes were great, with synchronised ice dancing in formation – great skating and a real visual spectacle. Of course, it finishes with a happy ending at Bonnie’s house.
The Little Mermaid section was next, and was a much shorter summary of the film with some gorgeous skating & wonderful costumes. The girls love sea creatures so they really enjoyed the ice skating fish!
After the intermission Minnie & Mickey had a little car trouble, and so along came Mater and the gang from Cars to help out. I thought this section was amazing, with several vehicles out on the ice driving around, weaving in & out of one another, and racing about. It was really incredible, and they looked fantastic – just like their on screen counterparts had driven out onto the ice.
The finale to the show was the Frozen section, with most of the film summarised, along with most of the hit songs; Love is an Open Door, In Summer, and of course Let it Go. Everyone in the arena went nuts for this section, and it wasn’t hard to see why – it was fab. The costumes, scenery & skating were all brilliant, and we were laughing and singing along throughout. Georgie’s favourite bit from the film was in there, along with all of the ‘key’ moments, and it was a great way to end the show.
Overall we were very impressed with the show, and all four of us really enjoyed it – the whole show is a real visual spectacle, set to a fantastic Disney soundtrack. The skating was really high standard and although there were a few slip ups, they were really professional in the way they got right back up and got back in sync with the other ice skaters within seconds.
My only criticism of Disney on Ice is the ticket prices which are quite expensive, especially when you add the total cost of taking a family, and the expensive merchandise too – although judging by the lack of empty seats & long queues for souvenirs that isn’t putting people off, and I would probably be willing to pay the price for a big birthday / Christmas treat. It was an amazing way to spend the afternoon, and the kids were talking about it for days afterwards – highly recommended!
