Cross Stitch Grids – Free Printables + Procreate Templates

I’ve been enjoying designing my own cross stitch patterns, and I’ve also started to play with some blackwork designs lately. So far, I’ve done a Zelda-themed one; you can find it on the same page as my other patterns.

For cross stitch patterns, I’ve been using PotiPoti to play with pixel art to draft ideas on my iPad before using FlossCross to create patterns, choosing colours, adding backstitch and other details like half stitches at that stage. Finally, I put together my free printable pattern sheets using the Affinity suite of apps. That technique doesn’t work well for blackwork however, as that is effectively 100% backstitch so starting off with pixel art ‘sketching’ isn’t an option.

I know a lot of people use graph paper to sketch out cross stitch and blackwork design ideas, and I went looking online for a printable sheet I could stick into Procreate in order to digitally sketch my ideas out on my iPad screen. However they were either not quite the format or style I wanted, or some even had the concept of thread count completely wrong.

So I decided to just make something for myself to use in Procreate – and thought I may as well share them – and if I was doing that, I may as well put together a variety of counts in A4 format for people to print & use at home too. So, here we are.

These A4 printables grid / graph papers have true to size (as long as you print them at 100%!) thread count grids – I’ve tried to include all the most common thread counts. The grids have thicker lines every 10 stitches, as is fairly normal for cross stitch patterns, and you can choose to print them in colour or greyscale, and with or without numbers along the edges.

I’ve done three Procreate template files – 100×100, 200×200, and 300×300.

You can change the grid colour by unhiding the ‘Colour’ layer, and then just change the fill colour of that layer to change the colour of the grid (you can do this quickly by choosing a colour in the colour panel and then dragging it onto the ‘Colour’ layer).
