I recently bought a big bag of budget friendly variegated thread because I want to try some different styles of cross stitch that make use of it, and the first thing I wanted to do was create some single colour patterns to stitch with them, to make the most of the colour variation.
As the name of my blog implies, I am a bit of a geek, so I decided to try my hand at some Zelda designs. These feature some of the classic elements like the various Hylian crests & shield, as well as a rupee and some of the most symbolic imagery from both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. I was having so much fun with it that I ended up making 20 patterns, which you can download for free below.
I think that they look really effective with the variegated thread and am looking forward to stitching some more of them. To make the most of the threads I have stitched these one X at a time rather than /// then \\\ which would be my normal method. I went diagonally on the rupee pattern, and tried to stay perpendicular to the direction of the lines on the other two.
Not all of them can be done with one small skein, so I’ll save the bigger ones for when I get some more threads – I plan on treating myself to some of the really fancy ones at some point to do some larger patterns, or at least some of the bigger KCS skeins. Right now I’m just metaphorically dipping my toe in the water, so I’ll stick to the smaller designs and try some other uses for the mixed bag I have before I do anything bigger.

Each PDF pattern file has the pattern in both colour and black & white, and I although I have suggested a colour for each one it is just that – a suggestion. Like I said, these patterns have been created with variegated thread in mind so choose whatever thread you want to use!
