When we were planning our visit to Yorkshire over the Easter break, we looked at local attractions online and discovered MathsCity which is based in Trinity shopping centre, in Leeds city centre. We asked the girls “do you want to do maths on your school holiday?” and our slightly strange children were very enthusiastic at the concept.
Both Georgiana and Lydia enjoy doing puzzles – Lydia is a total sudoku addict and it has been her special thing to do with Grandad since she was a little girl. I did A level maths and always enjoyed the subject so it isn’t too surprising that both our daughters have always liked playing with numbers.
MathsCity is a proof of concept installation, with the aim to eventually open a full size maths discovery centre – like the world famous Science Museum in London, but dedicated to all things mathematical. It is full of interactive exhibits for you to explore, all based around different mathematic concepts and applications.
We visited on our journey home from our holiday cottage, leaving the dogs happily snug & asleep in the car while we stopped for a lunch and numbers break. They had a special hydrodipping station set up for Easter, so the girls enjoyed coating some polystyrene eggs with colourful swirls – it’s so neat to see the colours go from floating on the water to coating what you dip.
MathsCity has a pretty big range of over 30 different puzzles and interactive things to enjoy – the girls had a great time having a go at absolutely everything. They especially enjoyed the giant bubble maker and the interactive sandpit.
It was the perfect place to stop on our way home, as the weather was pretty miserable and it let the girls get some energy out before the long drive – which was totally weird weather wise, we had everything from blue skies to torrential rain, weird clouds, and lots of rainbows. At times it seemed like there was a different type of weather through every window!
