After our wedding & honeymoon I did what a lot of people do; packed away my mementos carefully into cupboards and boxes, leaving a few of our favourites out on display.
However, as Georgie has gotten taller and much more monkey-like, more and more of our precious mementos have been hidden away in safe places, instead of being on show to remind us of those magical few weeks almost four (!!!) years ago.
Happily, we have recently been given this lovely bookcase with glass sliding doors, which is absolutely perfect for all of our bits and pieces. It is absolutely unique, having been handmade for one of my mother-in-law’s friend by her father. I absolutely love that we now have a place for all these things, on display in the living room yet safe from Georgie’s curious hands!
Some of the bits & pieces sitting on the shelves are:
- The chimney sweep (complete with real coal smudges and removable knitted champagne bottle with Z + J label) that my sister knitted for us for our wedding day – for good luck!
- Copies of our wedding day program and an invitation
- My bouquet, James’s buttonhole & my tiara and garter
- The “heart to heart” silver wedding goblets from my Dad
- The engraved glass & tankard from my Mother-in-law
- The sugar roses from our wedding cake, one of our wedding crackers, James’s cufflinks & my hair roses, along with a few more small things from the day.
- Two cancer research pin badges – on everyone’s place-name we placed one of these pins with a note saying a donation had been made on their behalf to cancer research – I really wanted to do this as my Mum was battling breast cancer at the time.
- Some honeymoon souvenirs, including the bowl and gecko we hand painted, a little bottle of mexican tequila, a fan, shaker & shot glass, as well as the boarding pass and champagne cork from our flight over. Oh, and one of the snorkels from our amazing day at Xel-Ha, which is the largest natural aquarium in the world.
- Georgie’s hospital wristband and hat.
Georgie loves standing in front of the shelving looking through the glass at everything, she is so nosy and has to investigate everything! We are fitting some safety catches so that she won’t be able to open it once she understands how to slide the glass panels across.
I am so pleased to finally have these treasured items out of the box and on display where they belong! It’s so nice to be able to look at the case as everything in there brings back memories of something important to me.
