What’s in a name?

Home Chit Chat What’s in a name?

Everyone has at least a few different names, or labels – I can think of quite a few I’ve had in the past, as well as some new ones I’ve acquired lately.

Some of my past names include: Lola, Zwe, Little Smithy (my maiden name is Smith and Smithy was already assigned to my older brother!), Flat nose (!), Ironing Board (!!!), Squirt, & Squire. Most of these are only used very occasionally now though, if at all! Some of these were terms of affection which I loved, and some of them weren’t quite so nice. People can be quite mean sometimes, and some names can hurt.

I’m not embarrassed about one of my names anymore, although I used to be when I was at school (and to be one meant you were desperately uncool)… Geek. Nowadays it’s much more socially acceptable to admit your geekiness though, and I’m quite proud to be able to contribute to our household income by being a geek!

One of the newer names that I have and love is ‘Corkhill’ – the name I acquired on my marriage. For a start it’s much less common than Smith! I’m also known in this household as either the ‘laundry fairy’ or ‘dishwasher fairy’ – mythical creatures that magically make dirty things clean.

But what about my newest name? I think it has to be my absolute favourite. I’m delighted to be “Mummy”.
