Breastfeeding benefits mum too!

From today until Saturday 29th July, the blogosphere will be full of great informative, funny, heartwarming and sometimes emotional posts about breastfeeding. It is the Keep Britain Breastfeeding Scavenger Hunt 2013 this week, and I am taking part for the second year running.

The theme today is “The Benefits of Breastfeeding” and last year I talked about the benefits for baby, so today I want to share with you the benefits for Mum when you choose to breastfeed.

I think it’s absolutely amazing! Women who breastfeed their babies are at a lower risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

Breastfeeding burns 500 calories a day… although the losing weight side of this particular benefit only works if you don’t then eat loads to make up for it, trust me!

James, my husband, likes that I breastfeed partly because it makes so much financial sense! Breastfeeding comes with very few absolutely necessary accessories – a couple of decent nursing bras, a nursing support cushion and breast pads, and you’re done. Formula feeding involves bottles, sterilising equipment, tins of formula, and you could even include the cost of boiling up all that water. It all mounts up to being much more costly.

I also find breastfeeding an amazing bonding experience with my babies. Georgie and I have an amazing bond after our 15 months of breastfeeding, and Lydia is already giving me massive smiles as she is put into position to feed, so she clearly enjoys it.

This year I am working with Theraline who make pillows for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I will be hosting a giveaway of two of their Wynnie pillows, which I gave a 5 star review recently! Check back tomorrow to be in with a chance of winning one of these great nursing pillows.

  1. Love how easy it is to just get up and go when breastfeeding, all I need to remember is nappies. the bond is amazing and we are both so relaxed and calm

  2. I love breastfeeding, I feel it’s helped me combat PND whilst keeping my bond strong with my little girl.

  3. I love how easy it is to whip out my boob and feed my baby – no faffing around with bottles and water and measuring and stirring…… Just pop the baby on and away we go, brilliant!

  4. I think for me the biggest benefit is the money we’ve saved and can spend on other things, we’ve had big period of unemployment and being able to feed the baby and not worry about whether we can afford to has been very reassuring

  5. No sterilising, no warming up, no making baby wait and you can’t really forget to back enough boob 😉 the list is endless x

  6. I’m able to be impulsive, do what I want when I want as I always have my supply with me.

  7. I suffer from a lot of allergies along with asthma and
eczema, so I love the fact that by breastfeeding my little girl I
can hopefully protect her from suffering the same.

  8. I read a study which said that women who breastfeed are likely to be thinner later in life, I’m unconvinced, but would be good

  9. I love the fact that my body makes unique milk for my baby to suit him at each stage of his babyhood and through sickness etc.

  10. The closeness and definitely the weight loss!! Not looking
forwards to having to diet again when baby decides to
