A family day out at Nene Valley Railway (NVR)

Home Days Out A family day out at Nene Valley Railway (NVR)

A week or so ago, we headed over to Wansford near Peterborough to meet up with James’s Dad for a family trip on the Nene Valley Railway. The girls love steam trains, as does their Grandfather, and the NVR is a sort of middle point between our homes, which was great for meeting up for the day.

The girls and their Grandfather

The weather was kind to us for most of the day, and we enjoyed a trip on the railway, pulled along by one of their resident steam trains. The girls were excited to spot Thomas in one of the engine sheds too!

We bought a family ticket which costs £40 and lets you travel on the railway all day long. We rode the entire line – from Wansford station along to Yarwell Junction, then all the way down to the other end, Peterborough, before heading back to Wansford.  The countryside was really pretty and we all enjoyed the journey.

The girls loved spending time climbing on, talking to, and playing with their Grandfather. We only see him once or twice a year, so it was a real treat for them to spend some time with him. Georgie drew lots of pictures with my notepad & biro – she adores drawing and is always wandering around the house with pens and paper so it was unsurprising when she raided my handbag for drawing supplies so she could draw pictures for her beloved Grandfather!

Because NVR is a dog friendly railway, we were even able to take Homily along on our family outing. Georgie and Lydia always include Homily when they are talking about who is in our family, and even though she is getting older these days and not up for big outings, a nice gentle ride on a steam train was right up her street. Low effort, and lots of cuddles.

After our steam train ride, we enjoyed a tasty (and reasonably priced) lunch at the cafe, before the girls had fun clambering all around the play area and exploring the train engine they have open to the public there. It is great fun, with a little station and train to play in, and lots of bits to climb on. I bought my traditional fridge magnet souvenir from the decently priced gift shop too.

Here is a little video of our day out, enjoy! The girls definitely thought our day out was worth the drive from Birmingham.
