Panasonic SC-RB5

Review: The Panasonic SC-RB5 bluetooth speaker is a small speaker that uses “Resonance Bass” technology to amplify the sound it produces. Basically this means it vibrates through the base of the speaker into the surface it sits on to boost the sound, giving it great bass and volume.

Packaging - Panasonic SC-RB5 review

The speaker comes well packaged, and comes with a usb cable to charge it & the instruction manual and everything is packed securely to prevent damage. The speaker itself is pretty small – it weighs just over half a kg, has a diameter of less than 10cm, and is just under 6cm tall.

On the back of the speaker you can find a flexible panel hiding the usb charging slot, aux in and audio out ports – safely protected when not in use. The SC-RB5 is the “worlds first splash proof vibration speaker” which means you can stick it next to the sink when you are washing up, use it outdoors while the girls splash in the paddling pool, and so on – without worrying. Just pop it on any hard surface such as a table and away you go.

The on/off button on the side is the only physical button, with the bluetooth, volume up & down, and bass boost buttons on the top all working by touch.

The speaker itself looks great – it has a simple & easy to use design and is elegant in it’s simplicity, with a subtly textured aluminium body. It was really simple to set up and has no problem being used with different devices once paired – just disconnect from one and connect to another.

One thing I love about this speaker is the blue lights on the front of the device change in sync with the intensity of the music. It is a fun little feature that brings a touch of whimsy to the device. It looks great when it’s on with the touch buttons on top illuminated by the same blue – very smart.

Panasonic SC-RB5 Bluetooth Speaker review

The quality of sound from the speaker is good & the bass boost feature can be turned on & off with the sound output still quite respectable when it isn’t being used – useful if the surface it is on doesn’t work well. You can throw this speaker into a bag for going out & about without it weighing you down too much and the 12 hours battery life mean you don’t have to worry about charging it up halfway through the day.

The only negative for this little speaker is that it is a touch on the pricey side – there are a few cheaper options out there for splash proof speakers, and also for bass resonance speakers – but none that combine both features together. 4 stars for a clever and cute little device.
