Last night we went into the city centre to see the Sons of Pitches perform at the Birmingham Town Hall. It was a great evening and we loved every minute of their performance.
The Sons of Pitches are a local a-capella group who won Gareth Malone’s The Naked Choir TV show last year, and have since taken the plunge to quite their full time jobs and try to make a living doing what they love. They all live together, creating music and producing their own YouTube videos as well. Currently on their first UK tour, I badgered James as soon as it was announced to buy tickets.
The show last night was brilliant – full of joy and laughter, with moments of raw emotion too. Their performance of Wuthering Heights was as fantastic as those who watched the TV show will remember, and their on-stage banter and improvised performances made me cry with laughter. They have amazing stage presence.
The lads sang a variety of songs, including some brilliant covers, their songs from the TV show, and some original pieces too. I am looking forward to their album coming out at the end of the year.
It was amazing to hear the different sounds that they could produce, at times it was hard to believe that there were truly no instruments or backing tracks! Their voices are incredible, they are so talented and clearly work hard and love every minute.
I don’t think I will ever forget the sight of them improvising a song about Cadbury Chocolate in barber shop style, or a song called “Position One, Position Two, I am in Position” in a combination of bluegrass and yodelling genres. Their boyband medley depicting the history of boy bands was genius and hilarious at the same time.
They are touring again in November and I highly recommend it! The show was, simply put, two hours of joy & open-mouthed amazement. In the meantime, make sure you check out their YouTube channel, their videos are great.
