I’m 20 weeks pregnant today, and so James and I headed to the hospital this afternoon (with a rather tired Georgie in tow) for my 20 week scan & consultant appointment.
The scan went quite well – Squidge was very obliging for all of the measurements and checks, and all was ok with him/her… no, we didn’t find out the sex! We want to keep it as a surprise 🙂
Georgie sat on her Daddy’s knee next to the examination table and kept waving at the ultrasound lady, my bump, the screen, and finally me. After a while she seemed to think the tv show we were both captivated with was a bit boring though, I think Raa Raa would have been preferable in her eyes!
Unfortunately the baby decided not to pose nicely for a photo so our scan photo is a little bit iffy, and best viewed upside down! The lovely scan technician was very apologetic and gave us two photos to make up for it, bless her.

The only rubbish thing about the day’s events is that the scan technician discovered that I have complete placenta praevia – my placenta is completely covering the cervix. This isn’t that uncommon and the placenta moves in time for the birth in about half of all cases, I think (although that stat includes partial cases too). I had partial placenta praevia with Georgie and it moved out of the way right at the last-minute, and only by the minimum amount, so I’m a little worried that this time around I’ll end up on operating table for a c-section. My placenta is posterior this time around (at the back) instead of anterior like it was with Georgie, which lowers the chances of it moving up out of the way, just to stack the cards against me!
I had very repetitive bleeding problems with my last pregnancy because of my low placenta, and as it is a more severe case this time around I have been given a list of things I’m not allowed to do, yadda yadda yadda. It’s more restrictive than the list I had with Georgie, even after I had the first bleeds. Any bleeding, even light spotting, and it’s straight into triage to check me out in case it’s a sign of more trouble to come – I think I’ll be packing a hospital bag early again. Taking it super-easy is the order of the day until next February.
But… despite this bit of rain on my parade, the important thing is that Squidge is bang on the growth charts, healthy and wriggling away in there! I am, for the most part, a happy & relieved Mummy today 🙂
