One of the first things I asked James to print when we got our Creality 3D printer was this giant LEGO wreath model by MagnumDanger. I’d seen photos of these oversized wreaths before and thought they looked like so much fun.
One of the best things about 3D printing is how easily you can customise things to your heart’s content. You can create and print almost anything – as long as it (a) fits on your print bed and (b) works when made from plastic. There are so many useful, fun, and decorative models available online for free, and the “giant LEGO” rabbit hole is definitely one worth falling into.
When we finally printed our wreath last Christmas, we loved it too much to take it down. Instead of packing it away, we decided to keep it up year-round and swap out seasonal studs as the months go by. Some of these designs I’ve found online, while others I’ve created myself.
So far, we’ve decorated it for Christmas (of course), New Year, Valentine’s Day, Lydia’s 13th birthday, and now Easter.
We don’t have a multi-colour printer setup, so we stick to single-colour designs – James isn’t a fan of the faff involved in pausing prints to swap filament!
So far, I’ve created three collections of models:
- Numbers 0–9, which can be used for years, ages, or anniversaries
- A set of “Happy Birthday” signs in a variety of font styles
- My latest creation: eight “decorate your own” patterned Easter eggs, plus a blank version you can customise however you like – or simply print in a solid colour
For Lydia’s birthday sign and the Easter eggs, we printed them in white PLA and decorated them using acrylic paint markers.
I’ve uploaded the model files as 3MFs, so if you do have a multi-colour setup, you can easily adjust the colours of the studs, backdrops, and lettering in your slicer. If you do – yes, I’m a little jealous! We’d love to upgrade someday, especially to something with an AMS system. I’ve been eyeing up the latest Bambu Lab H2 series, particularly with the added potential for laser cutting. I have so many ideas for cross-stitch-inspired designs that just haven’t worked with 3D printing (yet).
I’ve really been enjoying exploring this more hands-on, physical side of design – and I have plenty more ideas to come.
