An introduction to SherbetBox + Giveaway!

Since today’s National Stationery Week theme is #workhappy I thought I would share one of the things I treat myself to in order to make my work life a bit happier… the ‘SherbetBox’ stationery subscription box from Sherbert Lane. I use a planner to help me keep organised and find nice stationery is always lovely to have on my desk – and knowing that it is my self employed earnings that allow us to buy treats like this keep me motivated to keep working too.

I’ve tried several different subscription boxes, and I have to say this one is definitely my favourite. It’s great value for money, and the products are great quality and beautifully illustrated.

I got in touch with Claire, who is the creator behind the boxes, and she has answered a few questions for me about her boxes and herself. Introduce yourself – what is your background?

I had always dreamed of becoming a children’s book illustrator and when that suddenly happened for me I thought I couldn’t be any happier. I had worked in many different jobs, in shops, in an advertising company, as an insurance clerk, as a nursery nurse but always harboured a quiet little ambition to do something with my illustrating even though I left school at 16 and went straight to work instead of going to art college as I really should have.

Life had taken a turn that meant I had no job, was a single mum needing to earn some money and the only way I could think of doing that and still be around with my young boys was to close my eyes and take an unknown dive into illustrating.

To cut a long story short I found a lovely illustrating agent who took me on and suddenly I started getting work from them, I was flying blind and had to learn the business fast but I muddled my way through and now have many children’s books bearing my name – lucky, lucky me realising my dream in the end.

Why did you start SherbetBox – where did the idea come from?

I did the odd greeting card design here and there for clients but then I came across the subscription box idea and the thought of starting my own little stationery subscription box was suddenly very appealing. I loved my job but I was always illustrating what other people were telling me to, with a stationery business I could dream up my own designs and work to my own deadlines.

The SherbetBox was born a couple of years ago, launched with a Kickstarter campaign that was funded within the first day and got me 32 monthly subscribers. The number of subscribers has grown considerably since then as I have produced more and more editions for the SherbetBox Club each month.

I love the Facebook community you’ve grown and how you get your subscribers to help choose box themes – what gave you the idea to start the SherbetBox Club and what do you like about it?

I love the SherbetBox Club Facebook group! I started it because I really wanted to know what people wanted in their boxes, I wanted people who were subscribing to help shape the content with their ideas. The box will only work if people are getting the stationery they like so I wanted lots of feedback and ideas for themes they would like to see. I love the Monday night giveaways, we always have a daft question people have to answer and we are all getting to know each other through the answers! It is a warm community, everyone is welcome whether they are subscribing to the SherbetBox or not – just a love of stationery is needed 🙂

What are your plans for future of ShertbetBox?

At the moment it is about letting people know about it, a little business always finds it hard to be seen! I have some plans about producing some one off extra boxes, something you can send as a gift to a friend, but all still in the pipeline at the moment – never enough hours in the day…

Where do you get the inspiration for your illustrations?

It’s a question I get asked lots and I’m not really sure I have a good answer for it…the ideas just come, always something buzzing around in my head – I’m a bit of a daydreamer! If I’m really stuck I’ll have a scoot around Pinterest for inspiration, I’ll always see something that sparks an idea there.
