While we were staying in Yorkshire over the Easter break, we spent an afternoon in Skipton to have lunch and explore the castle. James and I have been to the castle before, back before we were married, and we both used to visit with our various family members as children, so it was lovely to show the girls the well preserved castle in the centre of Skipton.
Before we headed to the castle, we took Gypsy & Katie with us to a little cafe in Skipton called Kibble Bakery, which is a lovely coffee house that caters to both canine and human diners. They have a hound menu in addition to their human ones, and little dog friendly touches all around the cafe like loops to attach leads to & mats for them to rest on.
Both dogs had been such good girls all week while staying in a strange house and on the long drive, so they definitely deserved the two special biscuits we bought for them to share. We went for You’re Bacon Me Crazy and Nothing Gets Cheddar Than This because who doesn’t love bacon and cheese?
The dogs absolutely adored their very fancy dog biscuits, which we split between them to share – though Gypsy needed hers broken up a big as she isn’t as good at chomping on hard things as Katie is. They also had their very own water bowl delivered to the table so they could have a drink with their lunchtime snack.
As well as the food for our furry friends, we all chose some drinks and lunch from the menu. I also splurged on a biscoff milkshake which was absolutely to die for. Totally delicious. My sandwich was really scrumptious too, and Georgie raved over her Easter special crème egg pancakes. Lydia and James both enjoyed their meals too.
After we had all filled our bellies, we walked through Skipton town centre to the castle, where we had a pre booked time slot for entry – though we were let in early and were soon inside the gates to take a look around. The girls had a great time going up and down all of the staircases and into all the huge fireplaces.
My knee & head were both playing up so I was in charge of the dogs and enjoyed reading all the info boards while we dawdled & skipped some of the side trips from the main route – like a dash downstairs to the dungeons that Georgie & Lydia were delighted to visit.
Skipton Castle is a really well preserved medieval castle so it is really interesting to walk around, and learn about their three year siege during the civil war.
We enjoyed some coffee & cake from the tearoom before the girls staged a raid on the gift shop with their contactless cards loaded with their Christmas money – Lydia came out brandishing a full size toy bow & arrow set.
The weather was quickly turning miserable so we then quick marched up the hill to the car park to head off to see some family. If you’re there on a fair weather day and have time to spare they have a large woodland you can explore, but with the rain coming down and time marching on we skipped that on our visit. It was a good afternoon out, and definitely really enjoyable to share another of our childhood holiday spots with our children.
