Georgie’s 2 year development check

Georgiana had her 2 – 2½ year development check today at the health centre, and I am pleased to report that it was a resounding success. I was a little worried that after feeling a bit poorly for the past week she would be a bit withdrawn and unwilling to play along, but as soon as the nurse got her “games” out Georgie got involved.

Georgie successfully stacked bricks, matched colours, named body parts, did puzzles & all manner of other things with her strange new playmate. Happily she scored very well and got 36 month (3 years) scores on most of the skill areas, with one 48 month (4 years) score on the “Visual” skill area, and one 30 month (2½ years) score on the “Self-Care Social” skill area.

The one lower score was due to her lack of potty training, and when I explained the disruption we’ve had this year with moving house just as Georgie showed an interest in it, the nurse agreed with me that it was better to leave it until Georgie is more settled again – after we’ve moved into a new house in the new year. As soon as she is dry in the day, Georgie’s score for that skill area will jump up to match her general level.

Georgiana now weighs 11.86 kg (aka 1 stone 12 pounds 2.35 ounces, or 26 pounds 2.35 ounces) which sits her on the 25th percentile line which is where she has been since birth.

The nurse was very happy with Georgie’s speech and conversation skills, her general behaviour, how and what she eats, etc. I was a very proud mummy to see how impressed she was with a few of the things she was doing with her, and how well Georgie did with some of the tests!

It is always nice to know you are doing a good job as a parent, and as Georgie doesn’t yet go to a nursery or anything like that – other than playgroups (although we haven’t even found a decent regular one here), this morning has given me confidence that I am doing things right. Georgie seems to be a well rounded little miss, and there were no concerns with her. Phew!!

There is always that element of self-doubt in your parenting skills, especially when you see or read what other kids of a similar age are doing. I know it is not all about the scores on the development tests, and every child has different abilities and so on, but seeing that Georgie was polite and friendly this morning, and how well she co-operating, gave me an excellent boost.

Georgie was rewarded for her acheivements with a new Thomas magazine (complete with stickers, crayons, a plastic guitar and a whistle – joy), a fruit shoot, some Pudsey ears, and a gingerbread man. I was rewarded with lunch from Greggs… yummy.

I have to admit I was a bit worried we wouldn’t even make it there in time – this morning when I went into Georgie’s room to get her up at 9am she looked at me and then flopped back on the bed, calling after me as I left the room “shut the door, Mummy!” – little lazy bones! She was convinced (aka slightly bribed with a yummy and slightly naughty breakfast + fruit pouch) to emerge and with some frantic nappy changing and dressing and I managed to get both girls out of the house on schedule.
