During the half term break, we popped into Sea Life Birmingham for a morning to check out the LEGO Sea Explorers event, and the girls were also excited to get their first glimpse of the new baby penguin chick.
Georgie adores penguins so when she heard that a baby penguin had hatched at the Birmingham Gentoo colony she was really looking forward to going to see it, and she wasn’t disappointed. It is so small and fluffy!
For the first time, we also saw the penguins get fed with buckets of ice and fish, which was fascinating to watch. The penguins dug around in the crushed ice to find hidden fish, and had the odd squabble over their lunch.
For the LEGO activity, the girls got an activity sheet each and we had to find the three different LEGO stations around the Sea Life Centre, and then answer questions to do with the facts displayed on each.
The LEGO stations had different activities to do on each one, including getting to build fish with LEGO bricks onto an underwater scene. Unfortunately the third station looked like it wasn’t lit up properly with the UV lighting so didn’t work well, and people were building their name instead of fish in the underwater scene – but the girls enjoyed all three stations nonetheless.
Georgie and Lydia were both delighted to spot their favourite sea creatures in the Ocean Tunnel tank too – Lydia adores Mo the Sea Turtle and enjoyed watching him being fed, and Georgie’s favourite shark was spotted swimming around the tank too.
I always really enjoy the underwater glimpse you get into the penguin enclosure as you get towards the shop and exit, and we always stop for a bit to see if we can spot any penguins swimming around.
The girls like to take small toys along with us to wave at the penguins and Lydia had fun playing with one of them for a little while, which is always lovely to watch.
As we left, the girls showed the staff on checkout their completed sheets and were delighted to get a brand new pop badge each for their collection as a reward. Although this event is now finished at our Sea Life, there are plenty of interesting ones coming up this year and there always seems to be something new to see, too.
