Rating: (4/5 stars) Review: With Father’s Day fast approaching, we were sent this family friendly party game to try out & review here on the Mama Geek blog. How Am I Weird is a card game ideal for friends or family get-togethers. The basic premise of the game is much like several of the party card games you can find on the market; each person has a hand of ‘Comeback’ cards, which you play in response to a ‘Life’ card that is turned over. The best response to the card – or the weirdest! – wins the round. In addition to the ‘Comeback’ cards, there are 10 unique ‘Weirdo’ cards which allow you to less loose your imagination and come up with the strangest thing you can think of as your comeback. At the end of the game, you count up the Life Cards that you have won, and this gives you your weirdo rating, on a scale of The Faker to The Big Weird Chief. The original game includes 500 cards, with the square expansion set giving you an additional 300 cards to play with. You start with 100 Life Cards, 390 Comeback Cards, and 10 Weirdo Cards, and the expansion set contains 60 Life Cards, 232 Comeback Cards, and 8 Weirdo Cards. Suitable for groups of 3 to 10 players, How Am I Weird can be played just by a family of four like ours, or in larger groups. The boxes are small enough that they can easily be popped in a bag when going out to meet up with friends or family, so it’s ideal for taking with you to play on the go. I can easily see James taking this along to a work game night or us bringing it with us next time we see friends. It is basically a profanity free weird & wacky take on the Cards Against Humanity concept – and definitely one more suitable for things like work games night where I know CAH has been no-no-ed as unwise to take into the office due to it being a little too risqué. The situations presented on the life cards are definitely unusual – and the comeback cards even more so. It can be just as funny as CAH but without the shock factor of the more outlandish or profane cards. With a teenage daughter and a second just a bit younger than her I would be much happier playing How Am I Weird at home than CAH which only comes out for strictly adult gatherings and as such mostly collects dust in our ‘non-family-suitable’ games stash. We’ve played a game with the four of us to try it out, and all of us definitely enjoyed it and it had us laughing at the wacky answers we were choosing. Lydia is a little young according to the age rating, but she did understand almost all of the cards and the humour level was only a touch above her age on one or two cards. Each player starts the game with 8 Comeback cards and a Weirdo card, and then they take turns being the Big Weird Chief and picking up & reading out a Life card. The other players place down the best Comeback card from their hand in response to the Life card, and the BWC reads them all and chooses the best response. Players replace the Comeback card when they place one down. The winner of the round then keeps the Life card and at the end of the game the person with the most Life cards wins. The game ends when you run out of Life cards, or when ‘you want to go back to being normal’. The Weirdo cards give you an opportunity to make up your own answer if none of your Comeback cards are weird enough to play – and you can also take the chance to replace up to 5 of your Comeback cards from the deck when you use it. If played, you hang onto your Weirdo card and it can be played as many times as you like – so if you have a good imagination for weirdness it definitely gives you an outlet for some of your crazy ideas! We have been enjoying playing this game, and I think it will definitely get taken along to play with friends at some point. The addition of the expansion pack means we will have hundreds of cards to choose from and won’t easily get bored of mixing and matching the Life cards with the Comebacks. Admittedly, a couple of the answers we played did fall a little flat and I think the odd bit of slang used on the cards left us a bit puzzled – but overall it’s a fun option for a game night with friends or family get-togethers. Lydia says: How am I Weird is incredibly funny and would be a fantastic game to play with a large amount of people, who, by the end of the game, will all be laughing their heads off.
