Way back in late 2010 James and I decided that the ‘theme’ for our future nursery was to be a gender neutral (yet colourful instead of bland!) jungle theme – cheap to carry off and a fun environment for our future toddler to play in.
About halfway through my pregnancy, I started having problems with bleeds and was in & out of hospital for extra scans, stays of several nights at a time, and the overhaul of the spare room into a lovely nursery was delayed. A few months before I was due, we started looking to move house and so the overhaul was delayed again, this time for quite a while! We ended up moving when Georgie was 3 weeks old, and then seemed so busy since sorting out the entire house and just generally being new parents that it has taken until now to sort out Georgie’s Jungle!
Now she has started crawling and also just playing a lot more I really wanted to make sure that she had a safe & fun place of her own to go to, somewhere that I could sit with her and watch her crawl around and have fun, so we decided to crack on and finish sorting out her room. And here is the finished article!

Her lampshade is a Disney Mickey Mouse Paper Shade
* hot air balloon that I got cheap in the amazon lightning deals before Christmas, and my logic is that Mickey Mouse is out and about exploring the jungle… that makes sense, right? And when it comes to the gorgeous pink princess tent, well, I figure that fairytale castles are always in the middle of woods – so why can’t there be one in the middle of the jungle instead!
We used the FunToSee Fisher-Price Animals of the Rainforest Room Make-Over Kit
* to decorate the room, as we are renting so didn’t want to put up too many pictures or do anything huge like repaint the room bright colours! We picked up some fun jungle theme curtains from Ikea for just £9.99 which I am delighted with, and got some matching boxes to keep her various paraphernalia in, along with some cheapo plastic tubs for toys that she can throw around as much as she likes! Also from ikea are the chair & footstool, hanging net storage, white net storage basket, laundry basket and the jungle animal mobile above the changing mat. Oh, and the shelving!
The crocodile mirror is another Ikea gem which my parents gave to Georgie for Christmas – and she loves it! We were playing on the floor a few days ago when Georgie crawled over to the wardrobe then pulled herself up in front of the mirror and proceeded to give herself big smiles!
We have rearranged the bookshelves so that board books and soft baby books are at the bottom within Georgie’s reach, and the story books for reading not playing a higher up the shelves in safety.
So, there you have it – our little girl’s very own jungle. We’ve tried to make it a fun, stimulating place to hang out and play – not just somewhere to sleep in! What do you think – and does your child’s room have a theme at all?
