Recent Reads: Autumn 2013

I am a complete bookworm, and read every chance I get. I adore my Kindle Paperwhite which is ideal for reading in bed – James now gets annoyed if I actually read a paper book at night, with all the faff of hearing pages turn, and having to have a light on! As it is, I read at meal times, in the bath (I have a waterproof case for the purpose!), in bed, when I’m feeding the baby, and whenever I feel a bit crappy or stressed.

To me, reading is the perfect escape, the most enjoyable use of a spare ten minutes, and a fabulous chance to go for a wander with my imagination. Open up a book and you can be instantly transported to a romantic setting complete with dashing hero, amazing adventures or magical worlds. I read a huge range of books and if you looked at my Kindle you are likely to find a dizzying mix of chick lit, murder mystery and slightly weird sci-fi or fantasy,

A new author I have discovered recently, who has three novels & one short story available on the Kindle store. I definitely recommend buying Abby’s books, I really enjoyed these!

I’ve read through all of this guy’s “children’s books” over the last few months. I started with the Percy Jackson books, following our visit to the cinema to see the second film in the summer, and steadily worked my way through everything else he has written too. I really enjoyed his world of fantasy and myth, and his characters are fantastic. I love it when a lot of books are set in the same universe, with continuity and intermingling characters like these.

Julia Quinn

The latest in her fun “historical romance” series about the “Smythe-Smith Quartet” came out recently, so I’ve been having a bit of brainless escapism by reading those. These are filled with dry humour & I can’t help but giggle as I read them.

An old favourite of mine, I’ve been finding comfort & relaxation in reading some of her back catalogues. The old favourites are out on Kindle now, and I have been enjoying these books from her

I bought the first “Jumper” book after watching the film in the summer, and then read the entire series. Great stuff; a bit of thoroughly enjoyable modern sci-fi.

Although she has been around for many years I hadn’t tried Carole Matthews’ books before. So far I have read the following and enjoyed them all thoroughly. If I get any amazon vouchers for Christmas (hint, hint!) I will treat myself to some more of her books.

I first read the Earthsearch series when I was a girl (my Dad used to throw all his sci-fi books at me from a young age!) and I treated myself to the kindle ebooks this Autumn when I fancied reading them again. They are great classic sci fi books!
