I am so pleased that today marks the start of a new month, as January has been a bit (OK, a lot) of a wash-out. I’m hoping that the girls & I’s noses will stop streaming, my throat will stop stinging with each swallow, and that the pleas Georgie were singing at the sky through the car’s glass roof will be answered… “Rain, rain, go away,” indeed.
Georgie, Lydia & I have all been fighting off bug after bug all throughout January, and more than one outing has had to be cancelled thanks to our poor health, or the grim weather outside. I’ve been trying to get outside with the kids as much as possible over the last few weeks, but with the rain coming down every 5 minutes and without much warning at that, I haven’t wanted to risk them getting drenched whilst already saddled with bad colds.
We did risk one small outing in the great outdoors this week; just a mile-long stroll around the village with Lydia snug in a back carry using my new Mei Tai sling. Georgie kept warm and dry in her welly boots and her fantastic Regatta splosh suit, which is definitely proving to be worth the money in all this rain!
Despite the horrible weather, Georgie had fun splashing in puddles and saying hello to cows and the friendly sheepdog that sits in the middle of the road down by one of the farms.
I had wanted to try a little Geocaching for the first time, but unfortunately the rain started pouring down and so we just pressed on around the rest of the circuit without any stops or detours for what seems to be a fun way to do some “treasure hunting”. Although Lydia seemed to be snug in the sling I wasn’t too sure how waterproof her various layers would be if we stayed out too long in the torrential rain!
I will definitely be heading out again if the weather cheers up, as someone has obviously been to my parent’s village and dotted caches all around; there are 20 or so within a walkable distance for me, and half a dozen that shouldn’t be too far for Georgie’s little legs.
Have you tried Geocaching? I would love to know if you have any tips or advice! I think it sounds great fun, so I’m just hoping that the weather improves this month, and we can get out and about properly, without having to dash about between torrential downpours.
I know that Cornwall is a wet county, but I have never seen it this soaked through before. The fields are completely saturated with all the rain, and so every time there is another downpour the water runs off the fields onto the road and forms streams along the tarmac. The rivers and streams are as high as I have ever seen them, and Dad’s rainfall monitor is measuring silly amounts of rain.
It would be great to get out to the beach some day soon for some digging, and there is a place nearby with an amazing looking play area & wildlife centre I’d love to check out on a dry day too. It is difficult being at the mercy of my parents at the moment; staying in a remote village without any transportation can get a bit frustrating at times, especially with the weather keeping us so limited to indoor activities.
Fingers crossed the weather is kinder to us this month, we are starting to feel a bit stir crazy hiding indoors!
It’s so hard trying to get out at all right now isn’t it and especially do if there are bugs flying around. Here’s to a brighter February!
It is so difficult, it’s just been so rotten out there! We’ve managed to get out a few times but it’s still very wet, wild and windy outside.
We used to geocache much more before children. My tips would be give them the GPS to hold, take a small rucksack with treasures. Geocache etiquette states if you take something out of a cache you should swap for something of equal or higher value, you don’t want to find something your kids really want to take & not have anything to replace with. One time we found stickers & you’d have thought it was Christmas day my lo was so excited when I said he could keep them, & finally wipes & antibac rub, they may have been there a looping time, & at times the box can be pretty wet & grim. Enjoy though – it’s so much fun.
Thanks so much – some great tips here! We found a Disney collectible card on our first trip out and I definitely needed to leave something behind, Georgie would have been very disappointed if we’d have left it there because of not having anything to leave in it’s place!
I’m using my iPhone instead of a GPS so won’t be handing it over just yet, but she did carry her little bag for treasures and the pen 🙂

Thanks Charlotte. I’ve reviewed the Snugiwrap recently, I’ve been really pleased with it. The dog is so friendly and loyal – he sits in the middle of the road outside the farm. Georgie loves to say hello to him whenever we walk that way 🙂

Thank you – I’m hoping that things are looking up, but I don’t think the weather is included in that! I’m pretty sure it’s going to rain for the rest of the month, we’ll just have to try and make the most of any brief dry spells we get!
Hope you get well soon x The weather has been very bad and as soon as it rains here the roads flood as the fields are just saturated and full of water. We haven’t tried geocaching yet but it is on the list for when little one is older #countrykids
Thanks – it is the same here, the fields and ground just can’t take any more rain. Whenever there is a storm the road just turns into a stream, pouring down into the river at the bottom of the valley.

No, I think we are set for the bad weather to continue for a few weeks yet. My parents live high up so thankfully away from all the flooding, but it is very wild and windy up here!
We managed to get out and do a bit of Geocaching one morning this week, I’ll be blogging about it this weekend. It was fantastic fun!
