Our house is very much a work in progress, and we are taking our time making it exactly how we want to be. Part of the changes we make to each room as we decorate is choosing what artwork we want to display in there – blank walls are so uninspiring!
I take a lot of photos, so we have a whole stash of canvas prints of our girls waiting to be hung up around the house as we work on it, and in the living room, we have a large canvas of our favourite wedding photo up on the wall. It’s actually one my Dad took rather than our official photographer, but they were kind enough to let us put it into the photo album they made for us too.
It would be great to mix up my own photo canvas prints with some really pretty art ones, especially when we get the hall & landing plastered and I can put lots of smaller canvases all up the wall going up the stairs. We want to get the kitchen sorted out first though, which we were hoping to do this year but put off because of the pandemic.
I would definitely like to get some more wall art that isn’t just family photos though, especially once we finally redecorate our bedroom – it’s been a low priority so far. I can’t decide whether I want to build up a collection of interesting & geeky posters that reflect our personalities, and frame them, or go for something pretty & calming. I think our bedroom will be some shade of blue when we get around to sorting it out, and perhaps we could choose some art to complement that.
Our living room has a few posters already – but these are only up because they cover up the damage caused by two toddlers and some lego compatible wall tiles that were stuck up and pulled off a load of paint when we took them down! So much for the ‘it won’t damage your paintwork’ guarantee – although they did send out a replacement product when I complained. At some point, I will get tired of the pale pink and repaint to cover up the sins instead.
We also have a bit of wall art in here that the kids & I made for James one year when they were little – a really simple silhouette of their initials over some toddler scribbling. It’s a nice way of having some of their pre-school artwork around without having to hold onto hundreds of unidentifiable drawings!
Changing up the artwork in a room is a really easy way to change the feel of a room, too. Right now my (stolen by my husband!) office has a Harry Potter vibe to it, but this is all in the accessories. I have some Harry Potter themed bits on the walls, and some bits & pieces like a little poly juice potion cauldron sat on display, but if we put all those away and chose some black & white artworks instead it would change the room totally from my nerdy little Wizarding World hideaway to a much more sophisticated space – which is probably a good thing as it is also our spare room and I’m not sure all our guests would appreciate the anti-muggles sign hanging up on the wall!
Let’s face it; I’m just not the kind of person who has a perfectly co-ordinated and tidy home. We have colourful chaos, and I like it that way, as long as it doesn’t get too untidy! When we do get around to choosing more art to go up on the walls, it’s not likely to be super minimalistic and simple either.
