This week is National Cupcake Week 2013 (seriously, who decides these things?!) and so I decided to do some baking with Georgie to celebrate!
In our Thomas & Friends goodie bag from our day out at Drayton Manor, we got a Green’s Thomas & Friends Vanilla Cake Kit that just requires an egg, some butter, and a bit of water/milk to get you baking.
Georgie had a great time and insisted on doing almost everything herself which resulted in some very badly decorated cakes! We made the cakes after Georgie and I had finished our lunch, with Lydia sat watching us while she finished hers & then played.
She started & finished off the mixing of the cake mixture with her new baking spoon, and helped me whiz it up in the k-mix in between.
The whole thing was very messy, of course, especially with an egg poured onto the kitchen counter instead of into the bowl! I’d had to crack the egg into a glass for her to add it into the mix, as she was so determined to do everything herself. I did manage to convince her to let me spoon most of the mixture into the cases myself, so that we had something in them to bake instead of it being all over the table.
While the cakes were baking, we had some fun with the little fun sheet and stickers that were included in the box; Georgie did some colouring and make a sticker picture too. The helicopter was quite rightly flying above all of the trains, but I was a little bit surprised when she declared that the Fat Controller and Thomas the Tank Engine were also flying.
Unfortunately, these being the first thing I have baked since we moved, I completely underestimated the oven and managed to bake them at too high a temperature, so they weren’t as nice as they could have been. I only left them in 6 minutes, as opposed to the 10-12 minutes it said on the box, so it’s a good thing I did check earlier… Georgie thinks they’re “very yummy, mummy” though, so that’s ok!
I was quite impressed with Georgie; only one small yellow train decoration made it’s way into her mouth while we were decorating the cakes – all of the other decorations made it onto the icing.
Immediate testing was (of course) required. My little baker in training was very pleased with her first efforts!
