Bug-hunting adventures!

Ad disclosure: We were sent some complimentary Barny sponge cake snacks & a bug hunting kit in order to take part in this challenge.

A few weeks ago we received an exciting delivery from Barmy & Britmums; in preparation for some outdoor adventures we got a hamper filled with Barny snacks, a bug barn & bug catching tools, and a lovely DK children’s book all about bugs.

On our final morning at the Haven holiday park we stayed at last week, we decided to take a walk in the woods on-site and do some bug hunting. The contents of our caravan had been squeezed back into the car and the keys handed in, so it was time to find an activity to wear Georgie out enough ready to be stuck in the car for hours in the afternoon.

Despite the gloomy skies and wet leaves underfoot, we donned our wellies and set out with the bug hunting gear. With plenty of muddy puddles to splash in and lots to look at, Georgie was delighted to be  “looking for bugs, catching bugs!”

We were soon digging around in piles of leaves, lifting up bits of wood and little rocks to see underneath, peering underneath bark, and poking around in disintegrating tree roots… all in the search of the elusive creepy crawlies. Success! We managed to stock our bug barn with an interesting selection of bugs including a very long worm, several woodlice, a beetle, a couple of millipedes & one centipede, and a matching pair of a slug and a snail to finish it off.

Of course, Georgie munched on a few of her Barny snacks that we were sent, as we hunted for creepy crawlies. She really loves her new “Teddy Cakes” and never fails to be delighted whenever we offer her one! There are two flavours; Chocolate, which has a vanilla sponge with a chocolate-flavoured filling, and Milk which is chocolate sponge with milk-flavoured filling.

Georgie loves both flavours and was so surprised to find the hidden gooey-ness the first time she ate one! James and I have both had a nibble (or more!) too, and found them to be really quite yummy. The little bears are all individually wrapped which we found really useful while we were away, as we could just pop one in the bag as is.

After we reached the end of the woodland walk, we wandered down the coast path to wave hello & goodbye to the sea, before settling down at a sheltered outdoor seating area to inspect our finds. Georgie insisted on inspecting each bug in her new magnifier canister, and then looking them all up in her new book. We chatted about the different ways the bugs moved around, and their different colours, shapes and speeds.

Georgie really loved her bug hunting adventure & I look forward to many more to come!
