This month, I will be turning 28. James has informed me this means I can no-longer refer to myself as “mid-twenties” and must now join the “nearly 30” club. I just think he’s bitter because he’ll be 30 this December.
Anyway, I’m not too bothered about the “big three oh” which seems to be hurtling closer day by day.
On a side note… I honestly can’t believe that it’s July already. Lydia will be 6 months at the end of next month and time is flying by ridiculously quickly. 2013 has got some sort of acceleration built-in, I swear.
Where was I… oh yes. My problem isn’t really that I am getting older. What I want to know is, does this mean I have to abide by a new set of rules and regulations, and be a grown up now?
When I was a child, I thought that “a grown up” was anyone above about 25. As a teenager, I knew it would take a few years to work out what I was doing in life, and to get there, but that 25 seemed like the age where I should have things figured out.. a little bit. I would be getting married, having kids, and knowing what I wanted to do with my working life.
To be fair to my teenage self, I was pretty much spot on. I got married in 2008, 4 months after my 23rd birthday. Our first child was born when I was 25, and now, at 27, I have figured out what I enjoy & want to do to earn cash. All this makes me think that maybe I am a grown up after all, and this brings me to my next (and most crucial) question:
Am I too old for purple hair?
Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure dying your hair purple is not a grown up thing to do. Grown ups only seem to dye their hair outlandish colours for charity related reasons (and that’s great!), so is this out of the question for me now?
I have very long hair. When I say very long, I’m not over exaggerating. I can sit on my hair without tipping my hair back, and the ends of it are way below my waist. It hasn’t even been trimmed since a few months before Georgie was born, which basically means the ends of my hair are older than a walking & talking toddler.
Having neglected it for nearly two & a half years, I have a vision for what I want to do to with my hair next. That vision is purple. I want to get it cut to a slightly shorter length, with layers put in to give it shape. Next, the dip-dye technique to lighten to lower half… and then dye over that to make the ends of my hair purple – like this. I’ve been thinking about this for months now.
The only problem is, I’m pretty sure that it’s not a very grown up thing to do. We’ll just have to see if I’m brave enough I guess!

I work with a girl who is in her early 30s and she NEVER has a normal hair colour! (She is currently purple but she has been every colour apart from blue/green)
I say do it. Its just hair – if you really hate it you get it cut off/re-dye it. I, personally, love it and want it done myself
Do what ya want that’s what I say. I’m 28 and I don’t regard myself as middle-aged, and that’s the age we should ‘reign it in’ a bit in my opinion!
I do think it depends on your job too not just age. As a professional in a corporate environment, I can’t be radical these days… would bloody love to tho!

You should totally do it. Celebrate that long, thick hair! I see women of all ages with coloured hair and I think they all look good. Plus, as a 36 year old, 28 sounds really young to me!
@zoecorkhill you’ve never too old for purple hair. They even make purple toner for old ladies with grey hair.

You know how when you’re 10, 20 seems old? Well I’m just about old enough to be your Mother, so you must still be REALLY young…. 😀
No you’re not too old. I dye my hair whatever colour I want. If you don’t like it you can always change it again.
Purple is lovely but it does require a lot of maintenance. Sadly it fades quickly, so you’ll have to re-dye every 4 weeks to keep it vibrant. It looks crap when it’s all faded. I’d also bleach the ends first as well so that you get a better result when you go purple.
You set your own rules, no one else. If you want to be
purple, go for it. I’m always quite conservative with my hair
colour but I know I will definitely be having a blue or purple
rinse when I am grey!
Do what you feel like – don’t let age be a factor. 28 is
still really young anyway! x

Don’t let age govern what you do, age just means you
hopefully become wiser about your choices as you come to understand
what works for you. If you want purple hair and it feels right for
you, then go for it.
I colour in colouring books. Dye your hair purple. 🙂
