Christmas is fast approaching, and as my daughters grow older, they cherish the opportunity to go shopping and select their own clothes and other items. Instead of buying them a multitude of clothes for Christmas (yes, I’m a parent who uses birthdays and Christmases as an excuse to dress my children in the guise of gifts), I decided to purchase one or two pieces each and then give them a Primark gift card. This way, they can go on a shopping trip and choose some items of their own.
I returned home from Primark with two gift cards (and yes, the girls have been instructed to refrain from visiting my blog until Christmas!). Primark sells theirs in a tear-off greeting card style design, which is great, but they don’t come with an envelope. I know many people include gift cards with birthday or Christmas cards, but I wanted to put these into an envelope to place under the tree. Me being me, I decided to create a custom envelope that perfectly matched the size and shape of the gift cards. I measured them, designed an envelope template, and then glued them to keep the gift cards safe & sound.
Of course, I couldn’t stop there and ended up decorating them with Christmas illustrations. I figured I should share them on here so others could benefit from my over-the-top nature. This soon led me down a rabbit hole of gift card design. I discovered that there are two standard sizes for gift cards: one with a cardboard backing and another that snaps off, both of which are commonly found at supermarkets.
I had searched online, but all I could find were gift boxes or small origami-style gift box envelopes for the cards alone. Nothing included the backing/snapped off portion, which often contains more information about the card or is simply attractive in its own right.
So, I ended up with three size variants of gift card envelopes in four different festive designs. Each design offers further variations in the message displayed on the envelope’s flap. Additionally, I created perfectly sized festive note paper sheets that allow you to add your own message slip with the gift card. Each design includes envelopes for A6 (the standard size for a gift card on a cardboard backing), M6 Snap (the type where the entire thing is plastic or cardboard, and the gift card ‘snaps’ off the bottom half), and the Primark square design, which appears to be quite unique to them.
