When Georgie decided she wanted a fairy birthday party, I tried to think of something we could do with the kids to make it a bit more fun. I wanted something they could take home at the end of the party, as a nice reminder of a (hopefully) fun afternoon. I hit upon a variation of this idea online, and searched for low cost ways to do it. Here is what I came up with for my “decorate a fairy house” activity.
The idea I saw online used full sized wooden birdhouses to transform into fairy houses, but I knew that we both couldn’t afford this, and that small children would get bored too quickly decorating something that large. Instead, I found some papier mache mini bird houses on eBy that we perfect. They cost us around £1 per house when we included the postage.
For decorations, I used some things from our own stash and kept an eye out for bargains. One of our local shops can be a bit of a goldmine, and I found some stickers and glitter there. I picked up a huge selection of unused crafting paint brushes for 99p at the charity shop, and then picked up washable paints and some more stickers from various supermarkets. I managed to find some small Disney fairies stickers that were the perfect size to be the occupants of the houses, which was a stroke of luck.
We spread the houses and craft supplies out on the table and let the kids get stuck in whenever they chose to come and do one. The children really enjoyed being let loose on the small houses with paint, glitter and stickers, and that is all we really needed to make this work. It turned out to be a fairly low cost activity and the kids all got something to take home and hang up in their house or garden, for the fairies to move into.
