On Saturday morning we all piled into a couple of cars and headed over to Buckland Abbey, a National Trust property about an hour away from my parent’s house, to take part in the Cadbury Easter Egg Trail they were putting on all weekend.
Buckland Abbey is a beautiful 700-year old house in Devon, and is famous for once belonging to Sir Francis Drake, the sea captain & privateer.
We started our visit by picking up our trail instructions and heading out on their yellow trail to hunt for bird boxes containing various different animals. Georgie got into it really quickly and by the second box was heading over to pick up the lid and peer inside to discover which animal was hidden inside. She did amazingly well and insisted on walking almost the entire mile-long trail herself, only letting people carry her once or twice, and for just a few minutes at a time.
Once we had successfully completed the trail, we headed to the cafe and had a delicious lunch, after which Mum & Dad took Georgie and Lydia off for a walk around the gardens. Taking advantage of a bit of baby free time, James and I headed into the house to have a look around, along with my brother Mike & his fiancée Kate.
It was a really nice day out and Georgie did amazingly well, walking all around the gardens with my parents as well as round the trail, and getting really involved in the hunt itself. She even got an extra egg for her completed trail sheet, because her Grandad gave all the animals names when filling it in, as well as writing the species down. The rest of us were just called smarty-pants for writing down “Blue Tit” instead of “bird”!
The Easter Egg trail was excellent value, just costing £2 each in addition to the ticket price. My parents, brother & future sister-in-law are all National Trust members so got in free anyway, so we only had to pay for James & myself to get in, and our two “under 5s” being free. Our £2 got each of us a trail sheet and a Cadburys Easter Egg when we returned with the correct answers, so I thought it was excellent value!
Your parents can’t live far from my in-laws who live about half an hour from Buckland Abbey. Lovely place. We did the £2 egg trail at a property near my parents in the midlands, and thought it was excellent value too! Andrew loved it, great for toddlers 🙂
My parents are in North Cornwall, about halfway between Bude & Launceston.
