When I was a small child, I loved Spot the Dog. So much so, in fact, that my parents decided to give me a Spot the Dog bedroom.
I had Spot the Dog wallpaper, with a Spot the Dog border. A Spot the Dog duvet set, with matching curtains. My Mum even ‘hooked’ me an amazing Spot the Dog rug, which I still have to this day. Georgie used to have it in her bedroom, but it’s yet to emerge from a box in the new house… oops.
With my lasting fondness of Spot the Dog, it’s no surprise that I was eager to introduce my children to the world of Spot the Dog too. Georgie and Lydia both love the little yellow dog, and they enjoy the cartoon series, lift-the-flap books, bedtime stories book, cuddly Spot dog, and of course, being the modern-day children they are, the Spot the Dog iPad apps.
Eric Hill, “Spot’s Dad,” died this week at the age of 86, and the news left me feeling very sad.
It was only when reading the online articles about his death that I realised that not only did Eric Hill invent Spot the Dog, he was also responsible for the innovation of the first lift-the-flap book. My girls adore flap books… We are to be doubly thankful to him, it turns out.
I think the next time I sit down with the girls to read some books, I’ll dig our copy of Where’s Spot out from the piles of books we have, and just take a minute to remember Eric Hill and his legacy, while we hunt down the playful puppy.
