I’m a Morrisons Mum!

Home Chit Chat I’m a Morrisons Mum!

We were invited to test out Morrisons’ new “I’m Cheaper” promise over the bank holiday weekend, and cook up a yummy meal to see how good the produce was, as well as how much we could get for our money. For this challenge, we were provided with £80 in vouchers and asked to shop during the bank holiday weekend.

On Monday morning, we headed to our local Morrisons store – which is already our local supermarket – and headed off down the aisles to do our shop.

About every 6 weeks we tend to do a “big shop” with a full restock of the girls baby wipes & snack cupboard, and other irregular purchases, so our trolley was filled to the brim & the total at the till was an eye watering £143.39! This did include a lot of extras, however – with my parents coming to stay we decided to splash out on a bottle of nice wine, for example, and we spent £10 on clothes for Georgie from the Nutmeg aisles. We also stocked up on various household items, including a new pyrex jug, and refilled the medicine cupboard.

The total for food & drink, not including the unusual alcoholic extras, but including everything else including our huge stock up on kids snacks & other essentials, and also quite a few treats to tempt the girls into eating after being poorly left them with low appetites, as well as extra goodies in honour of my parents coming to stay was… £94.88. Not bad at all, considering how many more treats there were in the trolley compared to a normal weekly shop for us.

The yellow “I’m cheaper” signs could be spotted throughout the store and it’s not just on the own branded items either. Although a lot of Morrisons branded products have been reduced, things like ketchup have come down, and parents who choose to use Pampers nappies will be pleased to see that they have all come down in price too.

I decided to cook a huge roast dinner for our little family and my Mother in Law, so we bought a large chicken and plenty of veg. I had streaky bacon and stuffing already at home, but I have included their current prices at Morrisons in the price breakdown for the meal.

For dinner I served up masses of food; the roasted chicken was served up with roast potatoes, parsnip, carrots, courgette & shallots. Also on offer were pigs in blankets, and sage & onion stuffing. It all went down very well, followed by generous helpings of Morrisons own delicious toffee pavlova. I used my dad’s tip for the roast chicken, which was to pop a teaspoonful of curry powder inside the chicken before cooking, and it was delicious. It doesn’t make it taste like curry, but it really brings out the flavours.

There were loads of leftovers (as planned) so I popped everything in the fridge and on Tuesday I chopped and fried up all the leftover veg, the last courgette from the 3 pack I had chosen, and a packet of delicious Morrisons “Signature” chipolatas which we dug out of the freezer from an earlier shop. It was really yummy!

Even after eating so many of the leftovers on our 2nd meal, we still had pigs in blankets & loads of chicken in the fridge for lunches during the week, as well as all this in the cupboards: half a bag of Maris Piper potatoes, an almost-full pot of gravy granules, and half a bag of shallots.

The total cost per person of the roast chicken meal was £2.89, and it was just £1.19 for the second meal made from the leftovers. Great value, and really tasty!

Overall we have been really pleased with everything we bought last weekend; the fruit has lasted really well in addition to being well priced, and the jam doughnuts are simply to die for. As long term Morrisons customers we are really pleased to see the new lower prices and will certainly continue to head there for our regular weekly shop.

  1. Wow, you did a HUGE shop! We tend to do one big shop a month and then top up with fresh veg/fruit, milk and bread in between x

    • We had a lot we needed to stock up on – as well as really random bits like socks for little feet, new measuring spoons for baking, and a plastic fish slice so we don’t scratch our new non-stick pans!

    • They’re great, aren’t they? I always do loads of veg with a roast dinner so we can have a leftover meal the next day 🙂

I did beef stew in the slow cooker today (15p tinned potatoes, cheap stew veg pack & casserole beef – cheap and yummy!) and James is taking the last portion to work for lunch tomorrow, which will save us a days worth of sandwich stuff and be more interesting for him.
