While we were in Dorset for a long weekend recently, we used our Sea Life passes to check out the Jurassic Skyline tower, which is a 53m tall 360 degree viewing tower in Weymouth.
Formerly named the Weymouth Sea Life Tower, Jurassic Skyline offers amazing views over the coastline and Weymouth itself. On a clear day they claim you can see up to 26km away and we certainly could see really far along the coastline.
The “ride” lasts for around 20 minutes; you rise up sitting in an enclosed platform, do two slow rotations, and then sink back down again. It didn’t take long at all to go up and down, although it’s not so fast that it will make you nervous – unless you are terrified of heights like the poor woman who was sitting next to me, she was pretty petrified!
While the viewing platform (or “gondola”) rotates, an audio commentary plays explaining what you can see from the tower, and some local history. It was pretty interesting but difficult to hear at times as some of the people on with us were talking very loudly over it. You can also purchase a fold out viewing map but it was quite expensive for one bit of card so we skipped that.
Before the ride you are invited to pose for a green screen photograph, which you can then purchase afterwards – we chose to get a Weymouth magnet with us on. The photo souvenirs are quite pricey, but typical for this sort of visitor attraction.
The prices to ride the tower weren’t too bad, and if you buy a ticket for Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park, it includes your ride on the Jurassic Skyline tower, which makes it quite good value. You get two weeks to use the ticket after your visit to Sea Life, so you don’t have to worry about cramming both attractions into one day.
You can also book online beforehand to save a bit of cash – for both the tower and the Sea Life park. A land train goes all the way along the sea front from the Sea Life park to the tower for a fee, which the girls really enjoyed riding on.
We really enjoyed our ride on the Jurassic Skyline tower, and the girls found it really exciting. I loved seeing everything that was going on in the bustling seaside town from above, and the views were just beautiful.
We would recommend it – especially if you have Sea Life tickets so can go up for no extra cost. Sea Life annual pass holders and Merlin Pass holders can also ride for free.
