Our two girls both enjoy reading stories and watching films that are set in the magical realms, or steeped in mythology. Lydia, in particular, adores unicorns and fairies – last year she even had an incredibly pink unicorn-themed birthday party. This year I decided to look at Christmas gifts that revolve around all things fantasy, and I have a whole selection of toys, books, and other gift ideas to share with you.

Sticker Dolly Dressing – Mermaids & Unicorns

Lydia has always enjoyed the Sticker Dolly Dressing books from Usborne so she was very happy to have two more to do, especially since she loves mermaids and unicorns so much. She really enjoys dressing each of the characters into their different outfits and will spend ages sat down with one of these sticker books working her way through the pages.
Sticker books make great gifts for creative children, especially young kids who are still developing their fine motor skills – and we’ve never bought an Usborne sticker book that the girls have not really enjoyed.
Sticker Dollies Books – Mermaid in Trouble & Baby Dragon

As I just said, Lydia has been a long time fan of the Sticker Dollies books, so when she discovered there were chapter books, written by Zanna Davidson, based on the characters she was absolutely delighted. Lydie definitely takes after me because she is a voracious reader and loves to curl up with a pile of books when she is supposed to be fast asleep in bed!
Lydia says these books are “really good” and she loved the extra bit at the start of the book where you dress the characters with their sticker outfits before the story begins. Her 8th birthday is coming up in a few months and I have a feeling that I’ll be ordering some more from this series to wrap up for her.
Crown the Unicorn

From Cheatwell Games, this search and find game Crown the Unicorn for children aged 4+ is a fun tile based game which can be played at two different levels for different abilities. Move your crown piece around the forest, turning over tiles in the search for the unicorn. Some tiles will kick you off the board, while others will grant you another turn – and the more difficult version of the game involves having to memorise where you’ve already been.
The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch

Both Georgie and Lydia have loved The Christmasaurus, written by Tom Fletcher, since their cousin Izzy gave it to for Christmas a couple of years ago, so they were delighted to get their hands on the absolutely beautiful paperback of The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch, the magical sequel. Based one year after the first book, this book tells the story of William’s encounter with the icy Winter Witch and their quest to save Christmas.
This edition of the book has a totally gorgeous holographic colourful cover and blue edged pages. When I asked Lydia what she thought of the book, she shouted “AWESOME” about 20 times, so I think she has been enjoying the story!
Rainbow Unicorns

The girls have always loved Orchard Toys games – they make wonderful games for young children and we used to have a whole boxful of them which came out to be played with on a very regular basis. I have a little niece in reception who will love this Rainbow Unicorns game, with its colourful unicorns which you have to match together. All of the Orchard Toys games are sneakily educational or aid development in some way and this one helps to develop matching & memory skills, as well as colour recognition.
Unicorn Academy – Zara and Moonbeam

Georgie was delighted by this book by Julie Sykes, reading it in just a few days and enjoying every word. In Zara and Moonbeam, you follow the adventure of Zara and her unicorn best friend Moonbeam as they discover what Moonbeam’s magical power is. Georgie has already asked for more books in the Unicorn Academy series, so I know what she will be spending her Christmas money on if she gets any!
Pixelo Metallic

I’ve reviewed a Pixelo set before and the girls have enjoyed using the special Pixelo dot pen in their artwork ever since that review, so when this arrived for them to try out their were delighted. This set includes 8 different illustrations of magical creatures such as mermaids, fairies and unicorns, as well as the electronic Pixelo Pen and six different metallic markers to use with it. Using the pen, you can add metallic shimmery effects to the illustrations to make them even more magical.

Lydia loves jigsaws almost as much as she loves books, so the book & jigsaw gift sets from Usborne are perfect for her, combining two of her favourite things! This 100 piece puzzle depicts a colourful & magical unicorn filled scene, and it comes with a matching Unicorns sticker book. There are some really great-looking puzzles in this series, including a nighttime scene full of owls, the solar system, and more. They also do 30 piece sets for younger children, and a couple of 300 piece sets too.

Kids Fairytale Terrarium

Lydia had such a great time putting together this Kids Fairytale Terrarium from The Urban Botanist, who sell a range of child-friendly terrariums, including a dinosaur themed one. This terrarium do-it-yourself kit comes with coloured gravel, (optional) fairy lights, a model fairy, preserved reindeer moss, and some succulent plants which combine together to make a magical little world in a bowl. Their kid’s terrariums come with plastic containers instead of glass to make them child safe.
Festive Fairies Magic Wand Bath Fizzer

The girls really liked this magic wand bath fizzer from Mad Beauty as soon as they clapped eyes on it, and have already enjoyed using it for a magical bath. This would make a perfect stocking filler for any magic loving child this Christmas!

Artist Charlotte Posner has a whole range of gifts featuring her colourful and funky artwork on her website, and this Unicorn water bottle is really lovely, with paintings of ladies in various costumes. I’ve been using it out & about on our walks and the stainless steel bottle keeps water nice & cool while looking great.
Rainbow Coloured Unicorn Jigsaw

This Unicorn Jigsaw painted by Yvonne Jack from Puzzle Crazy features a gorgeous unicorn with a rainbow mane & tail rearing up in a field, in front of a beautiful sky. Although I do wish it was printed in higher resolution, I am looking forward to putting this puzzle together. £5 from every puzzle sold goes directly to the artist.
Wanda’s Words Got Stuck

This rhyming picture book by Lucy Rowland & Paula Bowles tells the tale of Wanda the witch, who is so shy she can’t talk, and is a perfect magical story for children who feel anxious about talking. Filled with potions, spells, and magical animals, this is a heart-warming adventure suitable for ages 2-5+. When I asked the girls what they thought of it, the answers were “I think it was good” and “I liked it!” followed by a very excited minute-long explanation of what happened.
Unipiggle – Dragon Trouble & Unicorn Muddle

These books are suitable for ages 6+ and are filled with colourful illustrations and a very muddy and unique pig!
Press Out & Decorate Fantastic Creatures

Nosy Crow has a whole series of Press Our and Colour books covering a whole range of themes, and this Fantastic Creatures book is perfect for Georgie who loves mythological stories and creatures. She has already made Cerberus the three-headed dog, a Sphinx, and a unicorn.
Magical Creatures Magic Painting Book

Usborne does a great range of Magic Painting books, and this Magical Creatures one is absolutely gorgeous. It comes with a paintbrush, so all your child needs to do is add water to make the pictures come alive with colour. This book features sixteen detailed scenes including a phoenix, unicorns, narwhals (the unicorns of the sea!), and more. Lydia has been enjoying doing this book and was very pleased with how the colours magically appeared on the page.
Frostheart – Escape From Aurora
