My Audible Addiction, a.k.a. a Dozen Audiobooks I Listen to Again & Again

I love to listen to audiobooks, often popping my earbuds in when I am hanging out washing or doing other housework, when I am working on my iPad, or when I am lying in the dark resting my eyes during a bad head day.

I have an audible subscription where I pay for a number of credits per year – one credit buys you one audiobook which are often around £15 to £20 full price, or about £8 at the member price. I am gradually building up my audiobook collection, by spending my credits or buying new books on my bank card in their frequent sales when the cost often drops below how much I pay per credit.

If I own a book on kindle then I can often purchase the audiobook for a lower cost too at their whispersync price – they actually have a matchmaker tool that scans your library for books you can ‘upgrade with audio’. I also have a kindle unlimited subscription and when I borrow a book I can make use of the same deal, purchasing the book for a few quid without needing to buy the ebook or make use of a precious credit.

There are some books in my growing library – and indeed whole series – that I go back and listen to again & again.

Here are some of my favourites, which are a mix of sci-fi, fantasy, chick lit, young adult – basically I enjoy a total mishmash of stories!

The Firebird Chronicles by T.A. White (ongoing series)

I love this series as it has great storylines, baddies that aren’t just one-dimensional bad guys, and a brilliant array of characters. The (non romantic) relationship between Kira and Jin is amazing and their banter never fails to make me laugh. I can’t wait to see where their story leads.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells

This series is a fairly well known sci fi series based around a combat cyborg that has hacked their control chip and how their life changes once they are freed from their owner. It’s told from the point of view of the cyborg, who calls themself ‘murderbot’ and has a very dry sense of humour.

Red Angel Series by C.R. Daems

I discovered this series back when Audible Plus launched in 2021 and since most of the series is no longer in the Plus library I have bought them with my credits, so I can continue listening as I’ve enjoyed them so much.

This sci-fi series follows the life of an orphaned girl who relies on her companion snake’s venom to keep her alive, and how she solves various mysteries while trying to avoid assassination.

The Martian by Andy Weir

This is a famous book with an even more famous film adaptation starring Matt Damon. I think listening to it as an audiobook is my favourite way to enjoy this story, though. I have the original narrated by R. C. Bray, but it has since been replaced in Audible’s store with one by Wil Wheaton, which sounds just as good from the sample.

Class 5 Series by Michelle Diener

I just finished listening to this series (again) a few days ago, and enjoyed them as much as I did the first time. This is a great space opera romance series which features a different Earth woman per book, who have found themselves abducted by the Tecran and having to work with ‘thinking systems’ to survive and escape captivity.

One More Day by Auryn Hadley

I love Auryn Hadley books, and this is one of my absolute favourites. It is a standalone book about a girl who is diagnosed with cancer and is almost entirely alone in the world. It is sweet, romantic and funny, and I love the different supportive relationships that develop between the characters – both romantic and platonic.

Hope Island Series by Holly Martin

These books are individual romance ‘chick lit’ books that are all based on the same island, with the characters interacting with each other until eventually everyone gets a happy ending. They are sweet easy listening, and I enjoy most of Holly Martin’s books for being enjoyable feel good stories.

Demigods of San Francisco by K.F. Breene

I’ve just started to relisten to these books. I’ve enjoyed a few of K.F. Breene’s series, but this urban fantasy one remains my favourite. They follow the life of Alexis and her two wards as she discovers she is more magical than she knows, and her developing relationship with a particular demigod who is on a mission of his own, and needs her help.

I enjoy the different characters in this series, especially the two wards and the demigod’s main team.

The Path of Temptation by Auryn Hadley

Although Auryn Hadley has a number of series (some under her alternative pen names, and some yet to be fully published as audiobooks), the Path of Temptation books are some of the best.

It’s a bit of a weird sounding concept based around a priestess living in the temple of temptation in a country that is ruled by gods and barons. They are fantasy novels with god given miracles, but really it’s all about the people and their (often poly) relationships as they try to save their god. This one is definitely for mature audiences only!

Cricket Kendall Series by Willow Hadley (ongoing series)

This series is a bit more light hearted than some, dealing with modern witches and werewolves, and fated mates. The main character Cricket is a teenage witch about to come into her full power and has three werewolf love interests that she hangs out with, along with an interesting circle of friends and family.

It’s an entertaining series and I’m looking forward to finding out how it continues. Willow is taking a bit of a break from writing much of the time and concentrating on her baby, but hopefully Cricket’s story will continue next year.

Untouchable Series by Heather Long

Beginning with Rules and Roses, the Untouchable series has a massive 12 books – with another 3 books to enjoy in the companion series of Blue Ivy Prep which follows one of the side characters in her own romantic adventures. Frankie Curtis has been declared untouchable to the whole of her high school by her group of male best friends, and when she confronts them about it and tells them she wants to date they all tell her they want the opportunity to date her, having all been smitten with her for years.

The series covers their lives from the senior year of high school to their university graduation, and all of the drama they have to deal with along the way – from truly terrible parents to trying to get a record deal. Heather has created a group of characters that draw you into the story, and you can’t help hoping everything will turn out ok in the end – for everyone.

Hannaford Prep by J. Bree

Hannaford Prep is another series where the main character is dealing with multiple love interests – but in this one they start off as (mostly) enemies. It’s a pretty unrealistic series with criminals mixed up with high school drama, with a poor scholarship girl surrounded by spoiled rich kids, and a safe full of blood-soaked favour diamonds. Even though you have to suspend disbelief a little bit, it is an entertaining story.
