Rating: (5/5 stars)

Review: After we reviewed Doomlings last year, they were kind enough to send us some expansions and playmats to make our games even more fun.

My parents bought us the Upgrade Pack for Christmas, which adds Dinolings, Mythlings, Techlings, Multi-Color, and The Meaning of Life expansions to the game – all of which make it even more fun to play. Combined with the base game, plus the Imaginary Ends and Castle Glass packs, we now have over 400 cards to play with.

The Imaginary Ends pack includes five sets of cards to expand your gameplay: Deeplings, Moonlings, Glitterlings, Fuzelings, and Magical Merchants.

Deeplings add a new card suppression mechanic to the game, Moonlings revolve around having a small Gene Pool (aka hand size), and Glitterlings are all about utter chaos, with their actions often depending on a random card. Fuzelings mix together these three types of traits to create some truly weird and wonderful cards.

Magical Merchants is a different type of expansion, adding a new way to earn points by collecting trinkets. Two of your Ages per Era are swapped out for Merchant cards, and a stack of Trinket cards is added to the gameplay. Players collect Trinkets by meeting their conditions, while also dealing with the restrictions or boosts those cards give you.

The Castle Glass Bolster Expansion includes 37 new Traits, 2 new Ages, and one Catastrophe, as well as introducing a new beach-themed class system to the game. You have to collect two or more traits of the same class to earn extra points, with curious and exotic variants earning even more.

One of the fun things about Doomlings is how easy it is to tweak the game to suit your tastes – and that becomes even more apparent with more expansions in the mix. We’ve played both with and without The Meaning of Life and Magical Merchants expansions, since these add extra gameplay elements and can be easily removed or included during setup.

All of our other expansions consist of various Traits, Ages, and Catastrophe cards that get mixed into the base game, so they’re always included. Having this many cards does make it easier to play longer or additional eras, though. This also lets us tweak things when using Magical Merchants – we prefer to play with two Merchant cards and two Age cards per era, rather than the recommended single Age card.

All of the cards are so fun to look through, with some truly gorgeous artwork and very amusing names and descriptions for the various traits. You can get a peek at these on the Doomlings Compendium, which lists all the different cards available across the packs.

As for the playmats, they make it much easier to keep your trait piles and other cards organised while you play – and save you from the dangers of accidentally mixing your cards with your neighbour’s. The Community Playmat in the middle helps keep track of the Ages and Eras, while also providing a place for your trait deck and discard pile. The mats have a non-slip backing and feel very well made.

The community and individual mats go together beautifully, and all of them feature gorgeous artwork pulled from various Age cards. When your game starts getting complicated, the stunning neoprene mats are perfect for stopping your cards from sliding into a chaotic muddle – while also looking great and keeping everything organised.

We’ve played Doomlings a lot over the last month, and it’s definitely going to continue to be one of our most-played games. Mixing in the expansions only makes it more interesting, too – each game feels so different from the last that we don’t see ourselves getting bored anytime soon.

Doomlings sell a bag you can use to store your playmats, but we opted to 3D print a storage box we found on MakerWorld instead. With so many expansions, we now have so many cards that the original dividers weren’t quite up to the task, so I designed a custom divider insert that we 3D printed to fit inside the box and keep everything sorted. We even printed a card shuffler to help tackle our mammoth trait pile!

Final thoughts: Doomlings was already a fantastic game, but the expansions and playmats take it to a whole new level. The added variety keeps every playthrough fresh, the artwork is a joy to look at, and the flexibility to customise your setup makes it easy to tailor the experience to your group. Between the clever new mechanics, gorgeous components, and endless replayability, this is a game that keeps earning its place on our table. For us, Doomlings and its expansions are an easy five-star rating – highly recommended for anyone who loves quirky, strategic card games with tons of personality.

Doomlings & the various expansions are also available from Amazon.
