Review: To celebrate the launch of their new Ice Cream Tasting Gift Box, Oppo sent us a selection of their low calorie ice cream tubs to try out. I know, low calorie ice cream seems to good to be true… or at least low calorie ice cream that actually tastes good enough to eat does! However, I have done some in-depth testing of these tubs and can assure you they are all absolutely delicious. I have to admit, I was pretty gobsmacked by how good they are.

We were sent six tubs to try; Simply the Zest, Caramel Chocolate Crunch, Cinnamon Crunch (labelled as Speculoos Crunch), Salted Caramel, Vanilla Pecan Praline, and Double Salted Caramel. What a fabulous selection!

My first impressions were definitely positive; the ice cream arrived well packed in a cardboard box with dry ice ensuring it was still frozen on arrival. The tub designs are all really appealing; I really like their branding, especially the little messages on the seals under the lids!

The calories value shown on the tubs is for a half tub portion, which is actually about twice what I would eat in one go, so I was impressed by just how low calorie they are; all six tubs are less than 200 calories per half tub portion. As for the ice cream, it looked nicely smooth & creamy, with decently generous chunks and swirls of their various additions.

Back when I was on a super low calorie diet in preparation for my gallbladder removal surgery, I tied some low calorie ice cream for a treat. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish the tub, it was so foul. That definitely isn’t going to be a problem with these tubs! I clearly picked up the wrong brand before, if I had bought any of these, I would have been delighted with it.

Caramel Chocolate Crunch

The Caramel Chocolate Crunch ice cream is a tasty balance of caramel and chocolate flavours, with just 199 calories per half tub. I really enjoyed this one, with it’s salted caramel, chocolate swirls, and chunks of biscuit.

Salted Caramel

I’m a fan of pretty much anything salted caramel, so I was really hoping that Oppo hadn’t messed this one up. Good news, they haven’t! This is totally scrumptious, made with fresh milk, and only 171 calories per half tub. It is actually made with Lucuma fruit to make it healthier than traditional sugar based caramel.

Simply the Zest

This tangy lemon panna cotta ice cream really hits the spot – it is made with lemon juice and fresh lemon zest, and is also a vegan option – not that I could tell. The Simply the Zest ice cream is 157 calories per half tub, and made with coconut milk.

Vanilla Pecan Praline

I’m not usually a huge fan of pecans in desserts as I think they can be overwhelming, but the balance of the vanilla and the pecans in this ice cream is just right. This ice cream is swirled with caramel sauce, and is just 198 calories per half tub.

Cinnamon Crunch

This tub is one of my top favourites from the six we’ve been testing, and it has a lovely festive flavour to it so it’s perfect for a winter treat. At just 199 calories per half tub, this creamy cinnamon ice cream contains chunks of cinnamon biscuit (think biscoff – or speculoos, which are a European equivalent, hence the label) mixed in, which gives it a nice texture. It even smells amazing.

Double Salted Caramel

As I’ve already said, salted caramel is one of my favourite flavours, so anything that is double salted caramel must be twice as good! I can’t believe this is only 178 calories per half tub, but it is. Again, this is actually made with Lucuma fruit as an alternative to caramel, and salted with sea-salt. It tastes amazing and has swirls of caramel running through the ice cream.

In case it isn’t obvious by now, I’m a total convert to Oppo ice cream. I wasn’t prepared to like them as much as I did – usually, in my experience, opting for a lower calorie or lower fat product means compromising on taste or quality. This isn’t the case with Oppo ice cream; it really is super tasty.

If you know an ice cream fan who would love a delicious selection of ice cream for Christmas, you can gift them with a Tasting Gift Box this Christmas. They’d get a (letterbox friendly!) tasting gift box with a golden tasting spoon, a greetings card with a personalised message, and a pre-paid voucher for ice cream delivery. You can buy a 1 month, 2 month, or 3 month voucher, and each month they receive 6 products of their choosing from the Oppo range of tubs and sticks.

We definitely recommend Oppo ice cream, I know I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for it in the shops from now on – as well as selling online, they also are stocked in major supermarkets. 5 stars!
