My Mummy

Review: With Mother’s Day coming up at the end of the month, the latest book from Penwizard’s line of personalised children’s books would make a perfect gift. We were given a voucher code to try the ordering system out for ourselves & review the finished product.

Ordering this book online was a breeze; the form was clear and well laid out, with different sections for each customisable character in the book. The My Mummy book allows you to have up to two child characters, along with the Mummy character.

For each character you can customise the skin colour, eye colour, hair colour & hair style, as well as whether they have glasses or not. You can also choose the gender of each child, and personalise the book with their name(s). A personal message is the final touch; this is printed on the first page of the book.

The only bad thing about the ordering process is that it is difficult to double check everything you’ve chosen; you have to go back to the start and run through each tab and section of the customisation to check everything. I think that it would be better if there was some sort of summary at the end to run your eye over, just to check that you have spelt all the names correctly and chosen the right eye colours, etc. You do get to see a preview of the front cover, which lets you do a quick check of all of the visual elements – maybe just adding the names of the personalised characters underneath this cover preview would be enough to set your mind at ease a bit more?

The book arrived quickly and was well packed, wrapped in bubble wrap inside a stiff cardboard envelope that was slim enough to fit through a letterbox easily – so no worries about having to be in for the delivery. A nice touch was the delivery slip that came with the package, with a nice note printed in the Peppa Pig font.

I am really pleased with our My Mummy book; the cover is a nice laminated hardback and the slim book has nice feeling to it. The pages are on quite a good heavyweight paper that is unlikely to rip easily when an eager toddler turns the page, and overall it is the quality and high standard of finish that you would expect from any other Ladybird book.

Georgie loves that she is in this book! She is nearly three and can point out which of the girls is herself and which is Lydia. When we read regular Peppa Pig books she gets excited saying that Mummy Pig is just like Mummy, Peppa is just like Georgie, and George is just like Lydia, so you can imagine how exciting a book with Mummy Pig and Peppa and George and Mummy and Georgie and Lydia is to her!

As soon as the book arrived Georgie was clamouring to read it, and really enjoyed it. The illustrations are really sweet and the “story” is lovely too. Each double page has Peppa Pig saying something about Mummy Pig, followed by Georgie and Lydia saying something lovely about me!

The amusing ending and fun touches in this book can’t fail to put a smile on my face; there are maps being turned into paper aeroplanes, everyone jumping in muddy puddles, and a toy panda tasting the cake mix as well as everyone else.

This book costs £14.99 plus delivery which I would normally say is a little expensive for a book, but as this is a personalised book I don’t think it is too steep – indeed, I actually ordered the My Daddy one recently for a Valentine’s Day gift for James, so we now have a pair. For your money you get a 16 page full colour Peppa Pig book, complete with personalised front and back colour as well as the story inside.

We give this My Mummy book 5 stars and my little Peppa Pig fan is eagerly awaiting Penwizard’s next instalment in the series, whatever that may be!

  1. It’s such a lovely idea isn’t it, we’ve received the Roary Racing Car book this week and my son adores it. My OH didn’t realise I’d customised the little boy and remarked on how like monkey it was!

  2. What a lovely gift idea! I know Ben and Chloe would love this 🙂
