Hans Christian Andersen

Review: Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are classic stories that have been rewritten and reimagined countless times, but nothing quite matches up to the wonderful original stories. This collections of eight of his most famous tales is beautifully presented, and would make a lovely gift for families who love reading stories together.

The large hardback book is clearly meant for story time; to be read aloud by a parent to their child(res). The stories included are The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Fir Tree, The Snow Queen, The Nightingale, The Princess and the Pea, and The Steadfast Tin Soldier – all wonderfully retold by Mandy Archer.

Each story is accompanied with wonderful illustrations, with all the tales using a different illustrator, each with their own distinctive style. This mishmash of styles, far from being uncomfortable or awkward, results in a beautiful collection of artwork that really works together.

The book itself looks gorgeous, with a blue hardback cloth effect cover with silver foiling. A nice touch is a bit of history about Hans Christian Andersen on the final page; a short biography entitled “The Storytellers Story,” which is really interesting.

This collection of stories would make a wonderful gift; it is so wonderfully presented and is one of those books you could treasure for years. 5 stars… it’s enchanting.
