The Alexandra

Annie – Theatre Review (UK Tour)

★★★★☆ Read our review of Annie at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre. La Voix shines as Miss Hannigan in this heartwarming family musical packed with memorable songs, talented young performers and plenty of audience-pleasing moments.

West Side Story – Stage Experience – Theatre Review

★★★★☆ Each year, The Alexandra runs a two-week intensive masterclass of theatre that culminates in three days of performances. Young performers between the ages of 9 and 24 can apply to take part in Stage Experience, dedicating a fortnight of their summer to putting on a musical. This year, the chosen musical was West Side Story, and James and I attended its first performance yesterday evening.

Ghost Stories – Theatre Review

★★★★☆ It’s hard to review a play when it finishes with a plea to keep its secrets, but I will do my best…

Last night James & I went to the Alex to experience the UK tour of Ghost Stories, a 90 minute play that promises to have you trembling with fear in your seat.

An Inspector Calls – Theatre Review

★★★★★ James & I hopped on a train to the city centre yesterday evening to attend the press night for An Inspector Calls at The Alexandra.

JB Priestly’s multi-award-winning play, An Inspector Calls, tells the tale of Inspector Goole’s investigation into the death of a young woman. Stephen Daldry’s National Theatre production of this crime thriller has returned for another UK tour, following the record-breaking success of the sold-out 2022 tour.

The Book of Mormon – Theatre Review

★★★★★ Olivier and Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon is embarking on a new UK tour and Birmingham is the current stop! We were invited along to the press night at the Alexandra Theatre, and so James and I went along to see the show for the first time.

Dear Evan Hansen – Theatre Review

★★★★★ I have always loved the songs from Dear Evan Hansen, and it has been on my musical wish list for a long time, so I was delighted to be invited along to last night’s performance of the UK Tour production. I had very high hopes for the show and I have to say that they were not disappointed in the least.

Lord of the Dance – Theatre Review

★★★★★ Lydia and I headed into the city last night to see Lord of the Dance: A Lifetime of Standing Ovations at The Alexandra, Birmingham. We both love to watch dance – in pretty much any form – and so we were thrilled to be going to see this famous show.

Pretty Woman the Musical – Theatre Review

★★★★☆ James and I headed to The Alexandra in Birmingham for a child free evening yesterday at the press night for Pretty Woman the Musical. Currently on its UK tour, this adaptation of the iconic Julia Roberts film is on at the Alex until Saturday. A modern day Cinderella story, this on-stage retelling of the 1990 romantic comedy was highly entertaining, if somewhat out of touch with reality.

The Sound of Music – Stage Experience – Theatre Review

★★★★★ The Sound of Music is a classic Rodgers & Hammerstein masterpiece of musical theatre, and the fantastic cast bring it to life in a wonderful way in this Stage Experience production. Lydia and I went along last night to the press night at The Alexandra, and were blown away at the talent of such a young (& largely ‘unprofessional’) cast, as well as how much they had learned in just two weeks of rehearsals.
