While we were staying with my parents during the summer, we visited the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre in North Cornwall. It is a wonderful family friendly place to visit, with lots of different animals to see.
The grounds of the sanctuary are really beautiful, and they do several talks about their otters and also about the birds of prey they have there. Lydia got to hold a Harris Hawk which she found really exciting, and we all really enjoyed watching the different otters get their lunch.
As well as plenty of otters, the sanctuary is home to rabbits, peacocks, meerkats, chickens, deer, wallabies, chipmunks, and more.
There is a pretty lake to walk around, and a woodland full of wildlife to explore – including deer that you can hand feed. Due to my knee injury I skipped the wood which has a few steep paths (they are manageable with a decent pushchair though), and sat with a book on one of the many benches, watching the otters and making friends with Dash, a three-legged Muntjac Deer who is very tame & loves to be petted.
As well as lots of animals to see, the Wildlife Centre has a really good tea room, and a nice gift shop. The cakes are really scrumptious and we all really enjoyed a nice drink & snack while we were there.
We’ve been a few times to the Tamar Otter & Wildlife Centre now, and my parents buy season tickets each year – we definitely recommend it! It’s a perfect outing on an OK weather day – when it’s not quite beach weather but you don’t want to be stuck indoors either.
Going to have to add this to our ‘must visit’ list. It’s not too far from us either. My daughter loves Otters for some reason!
