I’ve been enjoying designing geeky cross stitch patterns, and I thought I would try my hand at a blackwork style pattern, using the variegated thread I bought earlier this year (and originally tried out with my Zelda cross stitch patterns).

I’m delighted with how this turned out. The background areas are done with one strand of variegated thread, and the borders and main objects are done with two strands. I used the bargain KCS polycotton skeins that I got from Amazon, and they are a pretty good dupe of the DMC colour variants.

I stitched up a test piece as I was working on it but, partly due to what I had on hand, I ended up doing it ‘over one’ on 28 count evenweave so it is a little bit cramped in places. I did try out these ‘problem areas’ on a smaller count fabric – so a larger scale – and they looked good.

I think my favourite block is the cucco which is a bit of an easter egg in Zelda – attack them and they will get revenge!
