On Saturday, Georgie and I headed to our local Homebase store to take part in a special blogger’s craft workshop, where we made gifts for Mother’s Day from Homebase products.
Georgie loves arts & crafts and so the morning with Jane from Tea & Crafting was right up her street. Jane had been challenged to come up with some craft project using materials from Homebase, and she clearly embraced the task and had some fun ideas for us to enjoy.
First of all, we made a start on some special coasters made from ceramic tiles and some self adhesive felt pads. We had paintbrushes, PVA glue and various tester pots of Homebase one coat paint to decorate them with, as well as some additional materials of tissue paper, plain paper & some crayons.
Georgie chose to paint one of our tiles red and then draw a picture of Homily on some paper, to stick on top with the glue. An additional coat or two of PVA glue at home will seal the tile so it can be used for hot drinks.
On her other tile, we tore up strips of different colour tissue paper and glued them onto the plain white tile with the PVA glue. Georgie had a great time doing this and it made quite a pretty effect! Once both tiles were dry, we stuck the felt pads on the bottom so they won’t be in danger of scratching any surfaces they are used on.
Our second craft, a macramé plant pot holder, was fun to make and I definitely learnt a few new techniques doing it. Georgie enjoyed it too; she did most of the work on the wrapped knots. The pot holder was made using a metal curtain ring, white sash cord, and a quick grip “handi clamp”.
We clamped the ring to the table, then attached 4 long lengths of cord with a smaller length, and then knotted the cords together before finishing it off with another short length knotted around the ends. Very simple but effective, and it low cost in terms of materials.
The two ideas were lovely examples of affordable homemade gifts that you can make at home fairly easily with out the need for any expensive specialist equipment, and Georgie and I both really enjoyed making them together. It took us about an hour to complete two tiles and the pot holder, which is a perfect length of time to hold the attention span of a smallish child!
Doesn’t Georgie look proud of herself? There is nothing quite like a homemade gift.
