Long time readers of this blog might remember that back in 2014 we found and rescued an injured hedgehog near our house. Yesterday morning, as I got back from dropping Georgie off at school, I came across a hedgehog in our front garden, snuffling around.
It wasn’t looking particularly injured, but it didn’t look as heavy as it should be – and it was moving slowly. I came inside and hunted for a few necessities in case it wasn’t gone shortly and then went out to check on it again. As it hadn’t moved very far I decided to bring it inside and make some calls to try & find a rescue that could take it in.
I settled it in a box with an old towel, a makeshift hot water bottle, and a plate of wet dog food. It perked up enough to gobble some down, then snuggled up in the towel for a nap.
Thankfully I found a local wildlife rescue that could take it in, and a friend of mine helped out by using her lunch break to drive it over for me. Hopefully this little guy will have a happy ending.
If you ever see a hedgehog out in the daytime, something is wrong. Make it a priority to get it inside, in a box with high sides (mine was a bit short!), with an old towel or blanket to snuggle in. Keep it warm by wrapping up a hot water bottle and placing it in the box with it, and give it some wet cat or dog food to feed it.
