A few weeks ago we headed North to visit the Wren Kitchens HQ, fittingly called “The Nest” to have some fun in the kitchen with lots of food and Linda Barker. Wren Kitchens want to encourage kids into the kitchen to learn how to eat healthily and understand where their food comes from.
Georgie and I attended the event together while James took Lydia off into Hull for some Daddy-Daughter time. It was lovely for me to be able to spend some time just with my biggest girl, which doesn’t happen an awful lot now she is in school. As you can see from this video we had a great day!
First up we needed to decorate Georgie’s new apron & chef hat.. and the tablecloth too! With a variety of fabric markers, crayons & felt pens at her fingertips Georgie got to work and soon she had a hat with smiley faces, and her apron was sporting her name and pictures of people enjoying pizza & sunshine. After a chat between Georgie & Linda about their pets, the tablecloth in front of our seats sported lots of drawings of cats and dogs.
Our first food based challenge was to make mini pizzas. We used tortillas as bases which is not something I’ve tried before, but was really yummy & fun. Georgie and I cut different shapes from our tortilla base with cutters, and then spread tomato sauce & cheese on top.
Georgie topped her flower & heart shaped pizzas with pineapple (her favourite!), ham, pepperoni & sweetcorn. She even had the neat idea to use the smaller cutters on her ham so we had heart & flower shaped ham pieces too. Georgie helped the Wren Kitchen team transfer her pizzas to a baking tray, then we got to eat them up once they were cooked – yummy!
Once our pizzas were gobbled up, it was time to make some fruit faces with really funky face plates and a variety of different fruits. Georgie insisted on making a lady face with a beard, named Alana. We used lots of strawberries – Georgie’s favourites – as well as mango and clementine. It was Georgie’s first taste of mango and she is definitely a fan.
Our third task was to create a super fruity smoothie. Georgie chose mango, bananas and a touch of strawberry and whizzed it all up delightedly with some apple juice. Georgie certainly enjoyed it, as she drank it all up – every last drop!
The final task of the afternoon was investigating a mystery box filled with different fruits. Georgie loved this and had fun identifying pineapple & kiwi from their texture & shape, among others. There were lots of giggles and whispering from the kids taking part in the challenge!
We really enjoyed our afternoon of creativity & food with Linda and the Wren Kitchens team; it was a lovely few hours filled with fun and laughter, meeting new faces and exploring ways to get kids in the kitchen with you – and eating more healthy foods. Thanks to everyone for making us so welcome – both Georgie & I had a whale of a time.

Ah this is so lovely what great pictures. It was a fun.day and so lovely to meet you all! X
This looks like such a lovely event. We were meant to be going but I had to cancel the week before as my partner had to go away with work. I would have loved to have met you, although my toddler probably would have made a mess with all that food xx
