Review: As a family we really enjoy sitting down together to play games, and always enjoy having a new game to try out. We were sent Dough Nab from Ginger Fox to review, along with some rather yummy coffee and chocolate treats, and had a blast giving it a go.

Inside the rather attractive box you get:

  • 3 (non-edible!) doughnuts
  • “Head Baker’ hat
  • 60 doughnut cards
  • Turn tracker token
  • Instructions

Dough Nab is suitable for ages 8+, but our 6 and a half year old Lydia had no problem picking up the rules, and actually won about half the rounds we played on our first go. The game is for 3 to 6 players – you just have to remove a doughnut and the corresponding cards for a 3 player game.

To begin the game, you place the three doughnuts in the middle, and deal ten cards to each player – the remaining cards are set to the side. You keep your cards face down in front of you. The first person to start has the turn tracker token, and turns their top card over into their own discard – or dough nab – pile. Play continues around with each player turning over their cards.

When you see three of the same colour doughnut cards on the dough nab piles, you have to grab that colour doughnut from the centre. The first person to grab it gets to give their dough nab pile to another player, and the aim of the game is to get rid of all your cards – both in your hand and In your dough nab pile.

As well as the three colours of doughnut cards, there are a number of special cards. The magic doughnut cards can be matched with the other colours as a sort of substitute colour – so you could match two yellow cards and one magic card to grab yellow. Crumbs cards are what quickly became known as the “decoy doughnut” in our house – put there just to confuse you.

The other two special cards are the Don’t Nab! and Nab! cards. While a Don’t Nab! card is on the top of any Dough Nab pile, you can’t nab any doughnuts regardless of any other cards that get turned over – this card overrules all others.

The Nab! card is the opposite… as soon as one is turned over, everyone has to rush to nab one of the doughnuts from the middle. Anyone who successfully manages to nab a doughnut then gets to give away their dough nab pile to any player who didn’t nab one. When you are playing four player like us, this ends up with one player getting all the piles, which was somewhat hilarious and made for some very competitive nabbing!

After a doughnut has been nabbed, all the dough nab piles that haven’t swapped hands get moved back into your hand, and play starts again. With each play, the turn tracker moves along to the next person, who then turns over the first card.

It’s really handy having the turn tracker as by the time you’ve turned over a few cards and had a minor squabble over who got their hands on the yellow doughnut first, complete with your daughter falling off her chair backwards, you’ve completely forgotten who started that play… or at least I did.

There are various other rules, including what happens when someone nabs incorrectly, and so on. It is definitely one of those games that takes a round or two of play to really get the hang of it, but we all picked it up by the end of the second round, pretty much.

Once we got into the swing of things, we all absolutely loved this game. It was hilarious to play, with us all madly grabbing for doughnuts and watching the cards turn over with great concentration. We ended up eating dinner late as we played around three “just one more round”s before packing it away and finishing cooking.

At the end of each round of play the winner, who is the first to get rid of all their cards, gets awarded with the Head Baker! hat, and gets to wear it as crown of glory for the next round. The girls loved this added touch! The hat expands from child size to adult, so anyone can be crowned the winner with it.

This game is a lot of fun – we really enjoyed it as a family, and it is going to make it’s way into James’s work for their next games night, too. It is definitely one of those games perfect for playing with groups of friends.

We give Dough Nab The Game an enthusiastic 5 star rating!
