Rating: (5/5 stars) Review: Simba sell a range of mattress toppers and offered to send us one of their hybrid toppers to test out. We thought it would be perfect to give Georgie’s mattress a new lease of life and save us from needing to replace it anytime soon. We redid her room last year before she began year 8, and although we replaced her bed with a new bunk bed, we reused her existing mattress as a ‘for now’ measure due to our budget. A mattress topper is a great way to get more comfort for less cost than replacing the whole mattress, so I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to think about that in the first place. The Simba hybrid topper has four layers, rather than the single layer of memory foam that a lot of cheaper toppers have. First, a high density foam base, which then has a spring layer on top of that, and a lighter density foam layer above that for comfort, and finished off with a breathable soft sleep surface on top. This top cover can be removed and popped into the washing machine to keep things clean and fresh. The upper ‘Simbatex’ foam layer uses what they call an ‘open cell’ structure which allows more airflow than traditional memory foam, saving you from sweaty nights. This sits directly on top of the ‘Aerocoil’ layer, which is made up of micro springs, which again provides support while making the topper breathable. We used to use a memory foam topper that was just a single dense layer of foam and it definitely made us overheat, which is why we stopped using it when we replaced the old mattress. The hybrid mattress topper comes vacuum sealed in plastic, rolled up, in a box. You have to carefully cut the plastic along one end and then let the topper unroll and slide it out of the plastic. Within two hours it is mostly fluffed back up to size, and ready to use – and completely expanded within 24 hours. It was a two person job to get it out of the box and onto the bed, but other than being a bit unwieldy it was easy enough. The large cardboard box it comes in helps by having two hand holds on either end of the box, which makes two person lifting a lot easier. The mattress topper is kept in place using four corner straps, and has an anti slip base to stop it moving around on top of your mattress. Again, this is an improvement to the type of topper we have used in the past which simply sat on the mattress and relied on the sheets to keep it in place – it could often be found having slipped sideways across the bed. The corner straps double up in function as they can be used to keep the topper rolled up in case you need to store it – perfect for making a sofa bed just that bit more comfortable (it can also be used on an air mattress, if you are into a bit of glamping!). Georgie’s existing mattress is a fairly basic foam one and this topper makes a massive difference to her comfort level and I am sure that will improve her quality of sleep. She is really pleased with it – and we are pleased we won’t have to replace her whole mattress, since she is certainly satisfied with the upgrade. As far as the topper’s green credentials go, it’s good news there – it is made in the UK from 100% recyclable materials, and free from dyes and heavy metals. Simba mattresses can be returned to be recycled or refurbished to be sold on their online refurbished outlet store. They even take non Simba mattresses for their recycling service, and any excess foam is made into other products such as dog beds or carpet underlay. All of their deliveries are 100% carbon neutral, too. Simba give their customers a 200 night trial so if you are interested in buying a new mattress topper you can return it within this window for free and refund the cost of the mattress (or any payments you’ve made). It also comes with a ten year guarantee which gives you good peace of mind. Georgie says: It is very comfortable and much easier to sleep on than before.
