Times have changed and now being a stay-at-home parent isn’t as common as it once was. With both parents working, the necessity for childcare has grown. It can be tough handing over your little one to someone you don’t know.
When choosing a daycare, it is important that safety standards are being followed. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a daycare to ensure that your little one – and all others – are safe under its care.
Fire Safety
When it comes to the building itself, there must be fire alarm call points. Whether it be a daycare, office building, or any other type of commercial structure, there must be some kind of fire response system in place. These little boxes don’t seem like much, but they play a major role in fire safety.
These should be placed at appropriate intervals across the building. In the event of a fire, the lever is pushed or activated, and the alarm goes off. Local fire authorities are signaled and can respond in a timely manner. Fire safety is critical, especially when it comes to the care of your little one.
Background Checks
Safety standards at daycares are different depending on where you look. If you want to have peace of mind when it comes to the safety of your child, then it is imperative that any place you look to have background checks and criminal screenings. These are strangers, but they shouldn’t be total strangers.
The more that a daycare can know about someone they are hiring, the better. This ensures that the children are in a safe environment where their needs are being cared for by a qualified professional. There may be cheaper options out there, but do they provide background and criminal checks on the staff there? Know that going into the process.
A Gatekeeper
This can vary depending on the type of daycare you are looking at. It’s not necessarily like having a security guard on site – that would be unnerving for any parent. But it is meant to act as a barrier between anyone from the outside world and the children inside.
Many times, there is a lobby or waiting area with someone there to act as a liaison. They check guests in, gather information, and ensure that the person should be there. It is a seemingly small thing that can have big consequences if not paid proper attention. Make sure that a daycare of your choosing has a gatekeeper of some sort to act as a buffer when you walk in.
Proper Staffing
One of the most worrisome signs that you could see in a daycare is an overwhelmed staff. More often than not, it means that there isn’t enough staff to go around. While that might not necessarily leap out as a major safety issue, it can be. Think about any time you have had your attention pulled in a million directions, felt frazzled, and couldn’t be everywhere at once. Now imagine watching several other children while feeling the same way.
A good daycare will be adequately staffed to meet the needs of the kids. Having enough trained staff not only means being able to supervise the children properly, but it also means being able to prevent and treat potential injuries, stay on top of any issues, and ensure that the children are given proper care throughout the day. If a daycare you are considering has a staff that looks overwhelmed, then it may not be the best (or safest) option for your daycare needs at the moment.
