A few weeks ago I was invited down to London to the UK launch of a very clever looking device called Piper.
Piper is a “home security and automation device” – basically, a wifi connected camera with built in motion sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, and a whole host of clever features. You connect to it from your smartphone via an app – which is available on both iOS and Android.
Unlike most network connected cameras I have come across, the Piper has a HD camera which stays in a fixed position, using a fish-eye lens to see 180 degrees at once. I will go into more of the features when I review the camera soon. I am looking forward to getting my hands on one!
I think I will use it in the girls’ bedroom as a video baby monitor, especially as I like the idea of knowing the temperature information for their room – and seeing what they’re getting up to. You can set it to send a push notification to your phone when it detects movement which would be useful for finding out when Lydia wakes from her nap; she wakes quietly and doesn’t yell to get up for quite a while, playing happily with her toys until she gets bored or someone fetches her. The two way audio might come in handy, too!
It was a lovely afternoon and I learnt so much about the device, it was really useful to be able to chat to the team and ask questions about the things that are most important to me with this sort of thing. I was relieved to hear that it has great security measures after there has been so many worrying news stories about people connecting to IP cameras lately. It was lovely to meet up with some of my fellow bloggers, too.
This looks really good. You can get quite basic door sentry cameras which link to the net and have a URL for viewing via a smartphone app (ours was £10) but this does so much more.
